Jazz, soul, and hip-hop of the ’90s backpacker variety find a renewed energy in the sounds of Sidewalk Chalk. The Chicago-based eight-piece ensemble turned heads with its third album, Shoulder Season (Ropeadope Records), which shows off the chemistry percolating between MC Rico Sisney and frontlady Maggie Vagle’s lyrical back-and-forth. The Native Tongues vibe is thick, and even carried into the future amid the group’s urban-flavored jazz-pop arrangements. Oh yeah, and they have a tap dancer keeping time and kicking up hype on stage.
