Kevin Gillespie has struck gold again with his down-home restaurant REVIVAL. The fried chicken and meatloaf may dominate the spotlight, but the real reason to visit Revival is the cornbread that arrives fresh with every meal. Revival’s rendition of this Southern staple comes as simple triangles cooked in cast-iron skillets. The basic appearance belies the complex interior of Revival’s cornbread, which manages to evoke both the silky texture of a soufflé and the creaminess of a thick spoon bread at the same time. It comes from a recipe passed down by Gillespie’s great-grandmother, for whom we should all give thanks. less...

New Southern cooking is a trend we applaud, and this year has certainly seen a rise in the number of chefs and restaurants embracing regional cooking. But chef Linton Hopkins of RESTAURANT EUGENE was one of the first, and nowhere can you see the marvelous results better than in his $29.50 three-course Sunday suppers. Elegant comfort food, such as Creole fried chicken livers, fried chicken or bacon-wrapped Georgia trout, make you proud to live in the South, in a city that’s taken local cooking to such fantastic heights. less...

When we want the culinary equivalent of old-time religion, we make a beeline up Ga. 400 to chow down at the church of Bill Greenwood. His GREENWOOD’S ON GREEN STREET is always full of congregates worshipping plates of sage-strewn pork chops, Georgia trout with lemon-chive butter and the heavenly broccoli casserole, worth a pilgrimage in its own right. His pies — particularly apple, cherry and chocolate cream — make you wanna shout, “Amen!” And just like Sunday morning services, you need to show up early for dinner if you want a good seat. less...
