It’s rare to put the terms “wine geek,” “Francophile” and “unpretentious” is the same sentence, but those are the words we’d use to describe CELLAR 13 owner John Passman. In his new shop tucked into the corner of a strip mall on Roswell Road, Passman offers a fantastic and well-rounded selection of French wines, delving far deeper into some regions than many like-minded wine shops bother to go. While the store’s inventory is about 50 percent French, Passman also carries a great selection of Italian, Spanish and domestic wines, as well as gems from Austria, Germany and beyond. 3765 Roswell Road. 404-816-4071. www.cellar13.com. less...

Bordeaux junkies need look no further. SHERLOCK’S WINE MERCHANT sends reps to the French wine-making region every year to hang out at chateaus and buy wine at the source. The result is one of the Southeast’s largest selections of Bordeaux wines at some of the lowest prices. A few months back we bought a smooth and rich 1995 Chateau Simard St. Emilion for $25. But enough about the French. Sherlock’s also has tons of Spanish and Italian reds, a surprising variety of German wines, especially Rieslings, and a couple of curveballs, too, such as Silvaner. Show up at the Decatur or Brookhaven location from 3-5 p.m. on a Saturday, and you’ll be treated to a free wine tasting. less...

The best liquor store is usually the one that’s closest. But if you’re looking for a wider selection or savvy staff recommendations – or if you just want to browse through dozens of unfamiliar bottles waiting for a spirit to call your name – then PEARSON’S WINE OF ATLANTA is the place. From rotgut to vintage rye, Pearson’s carries a dizzying array of small-batch bourbons, single-malt scotches, boutique vodkas, exotic tequilas and a world tour of foreign liqueurs. The windowless walls of this venerable Buckhead landmark are lined with distilled beverages both familiar and obscure, making it easy to imagine you’re raiding a rich uncle’s liquor stash. And isn’t that a delicious thought? less...

We would never have guessed that our hunt for a bottle of 1921 Chateau Caillou Sauternes would have led us to the ANSLEY MALL KROGER. But there it was, enclosed in glass, tucked into the store’s temperature-controlled wine cellar with a price tag of $999. The selection of wine at the Ansley Mall store is vast; from rich ports to sweet dessert wines, the handpicked inventory spans the globe. Just as important, though, is the wine staff. On a recent visit, Steve, the French wine aficionado, gave an approving nod to the rose we chose for a light dinner of Mediterranean fare. He also pointed out that a standout was coming in the next week, which spurred a conversation about roses, which got us talking about the best wines for hot summer nights, which led to ... well, let’s just say they know their stuff. less...
