The staff, like the coffee, is bracing but excellent. Gingerbread waffles with lemon curd have long been the favorite here, although pancakes are good, too. And the biscuits have no peer. Are you getting the drift? Aim for the heavy carbs. The egg dishes are decent, but the kitchen is at its best carbing you up.

We tend to be traditionalists when it comes to the morning meal and SILVER SKILLET is about as traditionally Southern as you can get. One of the last true diners in the city, the Skillet serves big buttermilk biscuits available straight up or stuffed. Our favorite order remains the mild country ham with two eggs (over easy), biscuits, grits and red-eye gravy. You can get the same heart-stopper with pork chops or corned beef hash instead of ham. Return a few hours later for an equally hearty lunch and be sure you get a slice of lemon ice box pie.

How'd that Republican ad go? Keep your neo-hippie, BMW-driving, latte-swilling, "New York Times"-reading lifestyle to yourself! Hell yeah! Head to BOBBY AND JUNE'S KOUNTRY KITCHEN for a "real" breakfast. Honestly, there's no political affiliation required here. Grab a rocking chair on the porch and hope a ham, suspended above, doesn't fall on your head. Then go inside, pass by the Lions Club photos, and grab a table or place at the bar. Very good country ham, biscuits and eggs fluorescently scrambled with yellow cheese attract cops, latte-swillers on sabbatical and businessmen alike. It's truly a step into small-town Southern America. "375 14th St. 404-876-3872."

THUMBS UP DINER has everything you want in a breakfast place: a hip assortment of folks looking tame as they wipe the sleep from their eyes; a funky vibe that feels cool but still come-as-you-are; and a long list of breakfast dishes that runs the gamut from tofu scramble to steak and eggs. We especially love the Southwestern scramble with black beans, guac and salsa, as well as the waffle cakes - pancakes made with Belgian waffle batter - filled with pecans and served with their own little bottle of gen-u-wine maple syrup. Waits can be long on weekends, but that's pretty much a given in this town, isn't it? "573 Edgewood Ave., 404-223-0690."

You can't go wrong with any of the scrambles, and ginger bread waffles (served only on weekends) make it worth the frequently long waits. Those of us who've been regulars since this place opened remember Shira Levetan's incredible pies, displayed in the front case where the antique toasters are now exhibited.
