CANTON HOUSE is the favorite for dim sum in Atlanta’s Chinese community. We’re not surprised. Few dim sums are operated with such efficiency and such a broad menu. Novitiates will wave and say bye-bye to carts bearing chicken feet and pig stomach, but nobody leaves hungry. Anythingmore...

Novitiates will wave and say bye-bye to carts bearing chicken feet and pig stomach, but nobody leaves hungry. Anything made with shrimp or barbecued pork is bound to please even the most unadventurous diner. Get the rice cooked with pork, wrapped in lotus leaves. The fragrance when it is unwrapped is worth the price. less...

With Canton House just emerging from renovation and Oriental Pearl transformed into a buffet, it might seem that CHINA DELIGHT would win the dim sum race by default alone. Yet just one visit and you’ll see that this spot does dim sum as the finest houses in Hong Kong do. In a glittery setting, servers push carts loaded with steamed scallop dumplings, flaky taro cakes, creamy rice porridge and turnip cakes studded with sausage and griddled crisp. Don’t miss out on the magical tofu pudding, a custardy bowl of quavering tofu doused with a ginger-laced syrup.

Ha! Ha! This category makes us laugh every year. We are blessed with a zillion Chinese restaurants featuring different regional cuisines and hybrids. Hell, we've even got us a Mexican-Chinese restaurant. So, reaching into our hat full of favorites, we pulled out the name of PUNG MIE this year. The restaurant moved to fancy quarters a few years ago but continues to serve its home-style fusion of Korean and Hong Kong cooking. The hot braised chicken is one of the city's notable dishes (especially spiked with vinegar and chili powder) and we love the "meat balls" - sort of like Asian country-fried steak. Get you some jellyfish salad, too. "5145 Buford Highway. 770-455-0435." less...

Just how good is the dim sum at CANTON HOUSE? Check out the license plates of the sedans crowding the parking lot one Sunday afternoon and you'll find a number of out-of-state tags. Chinese families from throughout the Southeast make the pilgrimage to the Buford Highway institution to teach their kids the best thing about their culture: behaving well and getting to eat as many dumplings as you can hold. Glistening rice-noodle sheets hold tender, soy-soaked shrimp; flaky spheres of shredded taro are heavy with roasted pork. But it's the cart parade of dumplings that brings the throngs year after year. "4825 Buford Highway, Chamblee. 770-936-9030." less...

Buford Highway is rife with Chinese restaurants serving the midday meal of bite-size dim sum, which literally translated means "touch of the heart." CANTON HOUSE stands out from the throng, though. That the crowd is largely Asian is always a good sign. The extensive array of dumplings and little dishes are served piping hot from carts stacked high. Among the selection of traditional offerings are some new-fangled creations like shrimp balls wrapped in bacon and little cinnamon rolls stuffed with red bean paste. Get there early on weekends to savor the freshest selection and avoid a long wait for a table. "4825 Buford Highway, Chamblee, 770-936-9030." less...
