Try as we might, we just can’t find a better coffeehouse than the Westside’s OCTANE. They’ve got it all. Free Wi-Fi? Check. Cool, comfortable digs? Check. Great food? Check (love that house salad; adore that house-made granola). Friendly, community-conscious staff and owners? Check. And most importantly: Great, expertly made, quality coffee? Absolutely. Octane makes all of its brewed coffee from Counter Culture beans fresh in press pots, and the baristas are the best in town. Watch this year for a spreading of the love – Octane has taken over Method near Emory, and there are more locations in the works. 1009-B Marietta St. 404-815-9886. www.octanecoffee.com. less...

As commonplace as it is, a tremendous amount of work and skill goes into making a perfect cup of coffee. Slight fluctuations in water temperature, brew time or the grinding process can ruin your cup. And of course, there’s the bean. Even the highest-quality beans will leave you with a cup of bitter, caffeinated mud if they’re not roasted just right. That’s why we love BATDORF & BRONSON coffee, served at places such as Aurora, as well as B&B’s own Dancing Goats Coffee Bar in Decatur. Batdrof & Bronson’s deft roasts deliver more of a bean’s natural flavor than any local roaster. Sip and sniff the Kenya AA or the Dancing Goats blend and you’ll pick up a whiff of berries. That’s not artificial flavoring. B&B roasts coffee so skillfully, it reminds you that, oh yeah, coffee beans actually are fruit. less...

1009 Marietta St. 404-815-9886. www.octanecoffee.com. With the proliferation of so many franchise coffeehouses in the city, Tony Riffel and his staff at OCTANE still do things the old-fashioned way - hand-made coffee drinks, house-made syrups, knowledgeable staff and a welcoming atmosphere. In addition to the fabulous coffee, Octane offers fresh baked items at breakfast and sandwiches and salads for lunch. The unique selection of beers and wine also makes this a great spot for meeting with friends late night. And Riffel’s continued support of local artists with in-house art openings and the display of local artists’ work on the walls is just another way he has embraced this community. It’s what the Westside is all about. less...

Restaurants, hair salons, coffee huts … everyone seems to want to find a way to make art work in their businesses. But “curated” is not a word that comes to mind when you think of coffeehouse art exhibitions. While so many of those art shows make you wish you were drinking gin instead of java, the exhibitions by AURORA COFFEE IN LITTLE FIVE POINTS are exceptional. Installed on the conveniently long wall running down the left side of the cafe, the rotating group and solo exhibitions feature smart work by the artists — including Aubrey Pope, Jenn Brown and Steven Brown — who belong in galleries and not just coffee shops. less...

With everyone seemingly owning a laptop and Wi-Fi coffee shops popping up all over town, more and more people are escaping the office or classroom to get away, to work away from work. In our Westside neighborhood, the place to surf while you sip your java is Octane. But the most unique coffeehouse experience citywide may well be 11:11 TEAHOUSE. There’s a medicinal herb garden, and its luscious wafts of peppermint, ginger and rosemary make it as serene of a setting as you could ever hope for. Plus, there are 30 exotic tea combinations concocted from 150 herbs, and the prerequisite free Wi-Fi access. The chain coffee shops have their place, but to get unique you have to go local. less...

Atlanta was nothing but perked dishwater until AURORA COFFEE opened here in 1992. Its two shops, which are now owned by the same folks who operate Criminal Records, were never designed as cozy hangouts, but the baristas still receive the best training in town and the quality of the coffee drinks shows it. Order a single shot. Note its sparkling golden crema, its smooth and slightly piquant taste, its slightly oily texture. It’s a reason to go on living another day.
