Whether you’re looking for the perfect latte, a great office away from the office with free Wi-Fi, a tasty lunch sandwich or a super-chill place to grab a beer after work, OCTANE will outdo your coffeehouse expectations. It’s rare for a place to be so hip and so comfortable. We love the industrial vibe, the cool but not too cool staff, the locally produced art on the walls, the pastries and cookies from Alon’s and, of course, well-crafted coffee drinks and high-quality teas.

Aurora Coffee
Most coffeehouse art makes us cringe, but AURORA-LITTLE FIVE POINTS — the happening java joint sharing a Moreland Avenue strip with Criminal Records and Junkman’s Daughter — is actually worth traveling to for art, latte or no latte.

It’s a rare coffeehouse in Atlanta that serves an A-plus cup of java and features ambiance that wasn’t ordered from a corporate headquarters. But JOE’S EAST ATLANTA COFFEE SHOP succeeds at both. A truly diverse crowd displays itself in the retro, comfy furnishings. The baristas are well trained. The Wi-Fi is free and you don’t have to engage in genteel battle for an electrical outlet: There are plenty. You can hear live music now and then. You can buy a book for a buck. And, hey, it’s in funkadelic East Atlanta.

But if we want a place to hang out, cruise the Internet for free on our laptops, meet friends and cultivate that hip vibe so essential to offsetting the angst of being, in reality, a big nobody, we go to OCTANE. Shade-grown, organic and free-trade coffees are featured here. Pastries and sandwiches are trucked-in and better than you get at the corporate chains. “1009-B Marietta St. 404-815-9886. www.octanecoffee.comless...

JAVA MONKEY is more than just a comfy place to relax with a late-night cup o’ joe. Aside from the usual singer/songwriter suspects, the arty yet unpretentious venue also features national touring performers, jazz and blues acts and freeform improv. Weekly spoken-word performances hosted by Kodac Harrison showcase an array of beat poets, artists and, on occasion, even madmen. And established musicians frequently choose the Monkey’s intimate confines to test new material with little or no advance warning. “425 Church St., Decatur. 404-378-5002.” less...

AURORA, though not highest scorer on atmosphere, keeps our bean dreams alive with fabulous coffee that is rich and well-roasted, not scorched or acidic. Proof of its goodness? Stop by for a cup of regular coffee if you’re on the go, a shot of espresso if you’re “really” on the go or a serving of the “Liquid Crack house blend if you’re on the go at the speed of light. Other coffee options include cappuccino, cafe latte, cafe mocha, cafe Americano, macchiato and a bevy of frozen concoctions. Go ‘round the world with Aurora’s vast selection - your choice of Costa Rican, Ethiopian Harrar, Sumatra or French coffees, to name just a few. That’s not including blends and organic options. “I’ve had coffee and espresso drinks in every fucking state and in parts of Europe and there’s nothing that tastes like it or gives me quite the same caffeine high. It sends you into a very pleasant orbit. I also like Aurora because I like hanging out with disenfranchised homeless people, says one reader.
