This year, we’re tired of fancy-schmancy Cuban food. We’ve gone back to our roots in Havana and Matanzas. We’ve returned to decor-less LAS PALMERAS. This little Midtown cafe serves totally authentic home-style Cuban cooking without fuss. (Well, you do get a mommy-style server who doesn’t tolerate bad moods.) Our favorite dish is the simple masitas de puerco - not dissimilar to the Mexican carnitas, but garlicky under a heavy mojo sauce. You want to order them with black beans and rice - cooked separately - and fried yucca (with more mojo). The Cuban-style fried chicken is also notable. There’s good flan and classic guava with cream cheese for dessert. “368 Fifth St. 404-872-0846.” less...

Cuban restaurants have prospered in our city for more than 20 years. The vast majority serve homestyle cooking. The one restaurant in town that pushes the envelope is MAMBO where chef-owner Lucy Alvarez began experimenting this year with more rococo interpretations of her native cuisine. Truth be told, we still prefer the standards - especially the squid cooked in its ink with rice, the masitas de puerco and the fabulous vaca frita - fried shredded beef that requires a side of yucca drenched in oniony mojo. Black beans and rice are killer, too. Nightly Chino-Latino specials reflect Cuba’s indigenous fusion cuisine that developed after Chinese workers invaded the island. Dirt-cheap lunch specials. “1402 N. Highland Ave., 404-876-2626.” less...

LAS PALMERAS is overdue the top award for its consistent serving of the city’s best homestyle Cuban dishes. Dirt cheap and served by a friendly staff (including a woman with a compulsion to comment on your mood), the food is extremely popular with folks in the immediate neighborhood but deserves wider attention. The restaurant’s version of fried chicken is especially popular, but we love the masitas de puerco - chunks of roasted pork under mojo with onions. “368 5th St. 404-872-0846.” less...

But you’d be insane to overlook the Crazy Cuban in Marietta, which serves vibrant flavors in surprisingly serene surroundings. Savor any of the entrees that include the hand-pulled pork roasted in mojo sauce, and splurge on as many sides and appetizers as you can manage: the yucca, plantains and papitas rellenas prove especially reliable. less...
