OK, so there wasn't a lot of competition in this category. In the lawless age of modern "movement," ballet companies often struggle more with irrelevance than with ambitious ballet start-ups. But John McFall, the ATLANTA BALLET's artistic director since 1994, has brought a spirit of mischievous audacity to the 73-year-old company. Pairing folk rock and bluegrass with "port de bras" and pliers (not to mention introducing Batman and a walker race to the hallowed ground of "Nutcracker"), Atlanta Ballet has stripped off its Louis XIV fancy pants to reveal some lively limbs.
