Beauty and intelligence — now that’s not something you find every day on Atlanta’s hip restaurant scene. From fantastic cocktails to a delicious and thoughtful Mediterranean-influenced menu to the wonderful redesign of Midtown’s Atlanta Fencing Club building, we have plenty of cause to be smitten by ECCO. The menu, with its cheeses, appetizers, share plates, pizzas, sandwiches and entrees, makes for a highly versatile restaurant, whether you’re looking for nibbles at the bar or a five-course extravaganza. We recommend making a meal of the winning appetizers and the small plates, like delicately fried balls of goat cheese with honey and roasted clams with ginger and spiced ham. less...

Govantez Lowndez is a restaurateur who learns from his past. Where his defunct Commune was tucked away in a dark (though admittedly sexy) back corner of a west side development, THE GLOBE snatches the spotlight in Tech Square with a light, welcoming warmth. His new venture is both a great place to grab an easygoing bite with friends and a harbinger of Atlanta’s dining future: The mod restaurant looks and feels like a scenester hang, but it has the earnest heart of a neighborhood eatery. We’ll take more enticing concepts like this, please.

The culinary cognoscenti whispered words of worry among themselves when Kevin Rathbun announced he would be opening his own venture in the location on Krog Street where the defunct Virginia's had flailed. Those fears turned out to be most unfounded. RATHBUN'S is the smash success of the year. Rathbun has shed his corporate Buckhead Life Restaurant Group skins for a personal take on two of the city's perennial gustatory favorites: small plates and comfort food. Think mussels on toast, rib eye with blue cheese and bacon vinaigrette, and wondrous miniature desserts. Do not think about showing up on weekends without a reservation. Local powerhouse chef Shaun Doty ditched his downtown Mumbo Jumbo digs and, with a quick redo from The Johnson Studio, moved into the deserted Angelo & Maxie's space in an office building poised on Pershing Point. Local powerhouse chef Shaun Doty ditched his downtown Mumbo Jumbo digs and, with a quick redo from The Johnson Studio, moved into the deserted Angelo & Maxie's space in an office building poised on Pershing Point. Doty's a sharp guy - his fashionably casual and wholly affordable MIDCITY CUISINE is just what Atlanta needed. A glass-paneled wraparound bar anchors the invitingly open (yet not too noisy) room with a swank, sedate color scheme. The American bistro-ish menu has a classic feel that covers a lot of territory. Best bets include the cut-to-order prosciutto, the ethereal lasagne Bolognese and just about anything from the dessert list. "1545 Peachtree St., 404-888-8700. www.midcitycuisine.com" less...

Food-lovin' pulses began to race a few months ago when word got out that Chef Michael Tuohy, who first inspired loyal fans with his long-closed Chef's Cafe, was taking over Marra's Seafood joint to open WOODFIRE GRILL. Tuohy has infused his Northern Californian sensibility into both the warm, wood-paneled space and the ultra-seasonal menu. Expect tapas-sized plates of coddled vegetables, grilled meats and seafood perfect for the upcoming autumnal weather, and an exquisite cheese course. 3101 Piedmont Road 404-995-9982 http://www.fogodechao.com We racked our brains for a quirky, privately owned new restaurant that deserved this year's award, but the truth is that this has been the year of the corporate restaurant. Of the lot, this Brazilian churrascaria is by far the most appealing. Yes, it's kitschy and corporate at once, with gaucho-dressed servers wielding skewers of grilled meats for the Buckhead set. Apart from the costumes, there's nothing about the ambience to suggest Brazil (including the bland music). But the grilled specialties - 15 of them - are flawless and, served all-you-can-eat-style, a value at $35.50. Our advice: Barely nibble at the salad bar and don't sweat dessert. less...
