Shopping at any thrift store is a crap shoot: Sometimes you luck out, sometimes you go home empty-handed. But the fact that lots of nice, concerned people need the kind of tax deduction that can only come from donating to a recognized charity means your chances of finding some decent stuff at THE SALVATION ARMY aren’t half bad. During a couple of recent trips to the store just outside Avondale Estates — less picked-over than some intown locations — we picked up like-new shirts by Lorenzini and Ike Behar, saving us from having to go slumming in Neiman-Marcus.

When you get that thrift-shopping itch, plan on killing the entire afternoon on ALPHARETTA STREET IN ROSWELL. Start with the well-lit Value Village and Salvation Army, both located in a modest shopping center a quarter-mile north of the Roswell Square. Proceed up the road to the somewhat grungier Bargain City Thrift Store next to Georgia Lighting. Finally, if there's any room left in your car, head up to the roomy, stand-alone Goodwill just north of Holcomb Bridge Road. Value Village - East Atlanta
When you're thrift-shopping, three things matter: price, selection and the cootie factor. Well-lit, reasonably clean and spacious, VALUE VILLAGE is as scuz-free as it gets. When you're thrift-shopping, three things matter: price, selection and the cootie factor. Well-lit, reasonably clean and spacious, VALUE VILLAGE is as scuz-free as it gets. While prices seem slightly arbitrary, they're consistently the cheapest in town and you can't beat the Village for its huge volume. This is key because, let's face it, most used clothes were given away for a good reason and you've got to look through a lot of crap before you find the prize. Value Village puts the odds in your favor. "3857 Lawrenceville Highway, Tucker; and other locations. 770-840-7283. "www.valuevillage.com less...

OK, so you may not be giving a leg up to widows and orphans when you shop here or lending aid to Christian soldiers.
