Thank God someone finally did something interesting with the futuristic Trust Company bank branch that’s been decaying on Monroe for a decade. Local restaurateur Bob Amick has re-imagined the flying saucer-like building as chic pizzeria PIEBAR. The adjoining patio is particularly eye-catching. The building’s original drive-thru “pods” are now rooftop dining, covered by a giant white circus tent. At night, blue and purple lights illuminate the tent, creating an ethereal and undeniably glamorous vibe.

Atlanta's muggy, mosquito-lovin' climate may not lend itself to frequent outdoor dining, but during select weeks in late spring and early autumn, the patio at DISH offers pure romantic bliss. The vine-covered arbor, moody lighting and warm service give the patio an intimate, yet airy feel. Highland Avenue could be miles away. Chef Sheri Davis draws on Asian, Italian and New American influences to create plates such as the wildly popular purple potato and goat cheese salad, a sexy freeform seafood lasagna, and her signature chocolate dessert, lush with plump, boozy cherries. It wasn't so long ago that the only way you could dine outdoors in Atlanta was to grab a hot dog at the stadium. Now, every restaurant with a front stoop claims to have patio dining. The best outdoor dining in Atlanta is at CANOE on the banks of the Chattahoochee. Once a risque dance club where Buckhead white kids could go to hear soul music in the segregated South, it's now host to society weddings. Besides the loveliest river view in Atlanta, you get very competent regional cuisine with seasonal ingredients. Recommended: roasted rabbit, yellow fin tuna with coriander, Vidalia onion soup and peeky toe crab fritters with pickled onions. "4199 W. Paces Ferry Road, 770-432-2663. " less...

Atlanta is home to lots of patio restaurants, and rightly so. The weather's perfect for it. Unfortunately, most of them are marred by views of parking lots and traffic-clogged streets. But at VIRGINIA'S, located inside the wide-open entrance of The Stove Works, the alfresco spot is surrounded by views of architectural details tastefully rendered in corrugated steel, brick and wood lattice. Above the red and orange umbrella tables are strung colored lights, and tons of oversized tropical plants fill every nook and cranny. The centerpiece, a tile fountain, provides a soothing aural backdrop of continuous gurgles and splashes. And the food's not bad either. "The Stove Works. 112 Krog St. 404-827-9005." less...

4199 Paces Ferry Road 770-432-2663 http://www.canoe-atl.com Located at Vinings on the River, Canoe features a flavorful menu of contemporary American cuisine with both Southern and Asian influences, but the kitchen could serve charred Chia Pets and they'd still taste good if you're eating on the restaurant's outdoor patio. Patio diners not only enjoy a well-maintained garden rich with sculpture and flowers, but also can look out at a wide, babbling curve in the Chattahoochee River. If you succumb to the temptation to gorge yourself on, say, BBQ duck dumplings, you can enjoy an after-dinner walk in the charming river garden. less...

With its flowing, five-tiered fountain, patio bar, flora and chattering crowd, the patio at Front Page is spacious and welcoming. The outdoor bar is another crowd-pleaser here, and the crowds do flow to this J.Crew-meets-Jaguar-meets-MTV section of town.
