Rock snobs and the like converge on a little shop on the corner of Clairmont and North Decatur to search, amongst other music snobs, for hidden treasure. WUXTRY RECORDS' method of arranging used CDs by booklet (which then have to be matched up with an actual CD kept behind the counter) doesn't make for the ultimate in convenience shopping, but the system's a great space-saver. And the helpful, knowledgeable staff always has great music blaring in the background. Plus, if you pick a bevy of winners, they've been known to compliment you and toss in a free gift for your trouble. "2096 N. Decatur Road, 404-329-0020. www.wuxtryrecords.com"

Why schlep down to L5P to unload that Vanilla Ice "Hard to Swallow" dog only to get laughed out of the store? CD WAREHOUSE (not to be confused with the less cool Wherehouse Music) has 11 locations in the area, all crammed with used discs organized by artist and genre. Some have computerized inventory and they don't rip you off as a buyer or seller. It's a chain, but the locally run shops are reasonably funky. "Various locations. www.cdwi.com/cdwi/ga.html."

The "facts" moniker in this venerable L5P store's name is no joke. Who needs the Internet when there are living, breathing encyclopedias to explain everything you need to know about that impossible to find vinyl album, and then magically pull out a used copy, usually at a reasonable price. Although criticized for occasionally edging too close to the snobbishly aloof, High Fidelity image, the store has the most extensive collection of used vinyl around and a record loving staff with wide-ranging knowledge in a variety of genres.

It depends on which location you hit, but CD Warehouse has a varied and organized — if not particularly eclectic — inventory and friendly DIY approach, helped by its in-house computers, which show if the CD you're looking for is in stock and if so, how many copies are there. Hot product runs about nine bucks per disc, the box sets are even cheaper, everything's guaranteed, and you get a fair price for your trade-ins. The inventory turns quickly, but if you go often, you can fill holes in your collection for a fraction of the price of new.
