Happy 37 to the Atlanta Jazz Festival
Ahmad Jamal, Bill Frisell, Russell Gunn, and more head up this year's Atlanta Jazz Fest.
May is the time for jazz in Atlanta, a month full of creative music culminating in one of the greatest sources of pride for the city. Heralded as one of the country's largest jazz festivals with free admission, the Atlanta Jazz Festival announced its line-up for 2014, taking place during the weekend of May 23-25. Last year, the international stage featured some of the best performances of the festival, but this year the spotlight heads back to the main stage. Trumpet/flugelhorn player Roy Hargrove headlines Friday night with his sometimes smooth, sometimes fiery, always eclectic quintet. Saturday features some great names in Russell Gunn and Christian Scott, but Sunday looks to be the most promising night with the Freddy Cole Quartet at 5 p.m., avant-guitarist Bill Frisell's Guitar in the Space Age Band performing at 7 p.m., and piano legend Ahmad Jamal taking the grand stage at 9 p.m.
And for those wanting to venture around the park, the more intimate locals and international stages will be offering up plenty of music as well. Sounds from the Underground regular Darren English will be presenting his quintet at 2:30 pm on Sunday. The festival is taking Memorial Day off this year, so grab what you can during this short weekend of diverse and inspiring music.
