Top 10 reasons to overdraft this Record Store Day

Die Kreuzen, Public Enemy, Otis Redding, and more essential picks for RSD 2014

With Record Store Day just around the corner, knowing what’s available is a good way to contemplate what to spend your hard earned money on. This year I might need to get a loan due to the staggering amount of stuff I want. But sadly, that’s not going to happen. So instead, I made a wish list. Here are my top 10 picks for this years Record Store Day.

1.[http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/6937| Die Kreuzen: Cows and Beer 7-inch (also available as a 12-inch according to the RSD webpage. Flabbergasting, I know.)
This album contains the speed and ferocity a good hardcore record should, while incorporating more technical riffs and flanking tempo changes.

2. [http://www.recordstoreday.com/SpecialRelease/7100|Public Enemy: It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back LP.
It Takes A Nation ... is an undeniable hip-hop classic that showcases how music can have powerful social and political commentary while still being energetic, and, well, fun to listen to.

3. OutKast: Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik LP.

The ATLien’s freshman release that will keep your head bobbing from the first track to the last. A true hip-hop classic that just had its 20-year anniversary.

4. Christian Death: The Edward Colver Edition 7-inch.

A perfectly whiney Goth-rock/Death-rock 7-inch including some of Edward Colver’s (who helped document hardcore punk at its peak in the 1980s) photographs of Christian Death’s original line up.

5. [|Joy Division: An Ideal For Living ] 12-inch.

A reissue of a 2010 remastering of Joy Divisions 1978 EP which contains some classic tracks from the bands early days including “Warsaw” and “Leaders of Men.”

6. Pissed Jeans: The Very Best of Sub Pop LP.

Pissed Jeans is angry but no one knows why. This gritty, distorted noise rock record includes four live performances, showcasing the band’s furious sound that is most certainly meaner live.

7. Otis Redding: Pain in my Heart LP.

A soul staple and Redding’s most recognized album. Not only will this be the 50th anniversary of its release, its in original mono.

8. Ramones: Meltdown With The Ramones 10-inch.

This record has never been released in the U.S. and was initially used as a promo-only sampler.

9. Dinosaur, Jr.: Visitors 7-inch collection.

If you like Dinosaur, Jr. than this is something your going to want to grab. It’s a collection of the bands first four singles and a bonus 5th 7-inch including the tracks “Show Me The Way” and a cover of the Byrds “Feel A Whole Lot Better.” The coolest aspect of this package is that it’s celebrating the art of Maura Jaspers who did most of the band’s album covers.

10. Sam Cooke: Ain’t that good news LP.

A reissue of Cooke’s final studio album, which includes soulful legendary hits “A Change Is Gonna Come” and “Another Saturday Night.” Ain’t that good news is also celebrating its 50th anniversary.]
