Two of the biggest bands of the ’90s co-headlined Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood on August 8. First up was Soundgarden, who played a 13-song set which consisted heavily of songs from their album Superunknown, which celebrated its 20th anniversary this year.

Surprisingly, only one song from their latest album, King Animal, “A Thousand Days Before,” made it into the set. Next was Nine Inch Nails, whose lineup for this tour consisted of Trent Reznor, Robin Fink, Alessandro Cortini, and Ilian Rubin. The four-piece band mixed it up on stage by switching instruments every few songs. Regular drummer, Ilian Rubin, even took bass duties for the fantastic reworked version of “Sanctified” from the group’s first album Pretty Hate Machine. The 17-song set featured songs from their latest album Hesitation Marks and hits from almost all of their other records including “Closer,” “Head Like a Hole,” and “Hurt.” Fans in attendance who came hoping to hear the hits from both bands, were definitely not disappointed.
