Londoner Florence Welch, and her posse of backing artists, the Machines stake their flag firmly into the core of the indie soul movement with Lungs, a disc with drum beats and lyrics that pack punch. The sound is refreshing in a scene dominated by the retro stylings of Brit powerhouses like Amy Winehouse and Adele. Welch’s chameleonic voice which transitions seamlessly from raw, to ethereal to downright soulful makes each track more alluring than the next. Her dark lyrics in “My Boy Builds Coffins” and “Howl” are eerily morbid and bring out her she-wolf sensibility and obsession with death. But, never fear, there’s enough optimism to go around in her dancey carefree cover of The Source and Candi Staton’s 90s hit “You’ve Got the Love.” Try “Kiss With a Fist” if you’re needing some guitar-driven quirk or “Girl With One Eye” to hear Welch lay down vengeful, bluesy vocals.
