Chad Rad’s picks for Christmas week

As Christmas moves closer the shows have dried up a bit, but there are still plenty of things going on this week

Christmas time is upon us once again, and it seems that the volume of nightly shows is slowing down a bit. But there’s still plenty going on when you need respite from the family, the cold, the shopping frenzy, or if you’re just looking for something to do this week.

?

Mon., Dec. 21

?
Derek Lyn Plastic, Radio Nowhere and North Trolls are playing at 529. It’s free and the music starts at 9 p.m. Punk rock, power pop kind of stuff.

?

Buffalo Bangers, Gazzelles, Platonic Sex and Cumshot DF at WonderRoot. A suggested donation of $5 is listed on the flier and the music starts at 9 p.m. This show is worth the price of admission alone for the Buffalo Bangers’ dark, avant-hippie song stylings.

?

Tues. Dec. 22

?
DJs Josh & Jacob (a.k.a. Those Kids) are hosting a Christmas Potluck at 529. Bring a covered dish and hear only the finest in old school country, post-punk,  Southern hip-hop and all points between being spun until last call at 529. Free. 9 p.m.

?

Wed., Dec.23

?
Travel by Train, the Long Shadows, Book of Colors at The Earl. $7. 8:30 p.m.

?

Mammals, Heavy Cream and Natural Child at Star Bar.  It’s been so long since Mammals played a show that no one can remember exactly how long ago it’s been... They were, perhaps, the greatest Die Slaughterhaus band of recent years to never release anything. Rumor has it there’s going to be a puppet show as well.$5. 9 p.m.

?

Fri., Dec. 25

?
A PBR Christmas featuring Fiend Without a Face, Dan Sartain and West End Motel at The Earl. $5. 9 p.m. In the interest of full disclosure I released a 7-inch by the opening act, West End Motel, on Ponce de Leon Records a few years back. But I’m most excited to see Fiend Without A Face (feat. members of Mastodon) bring the surf/horror/rockabilly sounds back from the grave for another holiday show.

?

Sat., Dec. 26

?
Death Domain (Adam from Sids), Sleep Creeps, Pleasure Cruise at 529. A paltry sum of $3 will get you in the door for this unofficial showcase for Deerhunter bassist Josh Fauver’s Army of Bad Luck Records. The music start at 9 p.m.

?

Eric Bachmann (Crooked Fingers, Archers of Loaf), Liz Durrett, the Meeks Family at The Earl. $10. 9 p.m.

?

Nine Inch Neils, El Cobra Negro Atlanta’s premiere Neil Diamond cover band headlines a “night after Christmas party.” Come hear such harrowing classics as “Sweet Caroline,” “America,” “I Am I Said” and more, all rendered with the same timeless passion of the Jazz Singer himself. El Cobra Negro plays a set of noirish, south of the boarder psychedelic soul. $8. 9 p.m. Star Bar. 404-681-9018.
