Noted acts
THE BREEZE KINGS — See Earshot. Blue Sky Tavern/McDonough (Powell)
PETER BRUNTNELL — With Normal for Bridgewater, South Londoner Bruntnell has released the best Son Volt/Wilco album in the past five years. Strummy melodies sink in slowly but surely and the band kicks up the dust but can also lay low under the shady tree when appropriate. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz)
EYEDRUM MUSIC FESTIVAL — Downtown space Eyedrum celebrates two years of open doors and adventurous music with a seven-hour extravaganza featuring bands and refreshments. The festival features Chattanooga electronics/percussion revivalist act, Shaking Ray Levis, local genre-busting free-jazz experimenters Knox, ambient vocalist Alison Kendra Hunt (supported by members of the eclectic Samadha Trio), the country punk of Stetson Fitz, Jeff Mcleod’s solo guitar/theremin sound project, gezoleen, and reed player/Cecil Taylor alumni Harald Kimmig playing with tuba player Carl Ludwig Huebsch, among others. Doors open at 5 p.m., and show starts at 6. Eyedrum (Khalid)
KING JOHNSON — Ask a roomful of local blues musicians to name their favorite local performer and one name that will surface repeatedly is Oliver Wood, King Johnson’s guitarist/vocalist. King Johnson, while frequently booked in blues venues, is more diverse than most blues acts, having built a solid regional reputation for its horn-driven mix of blues, funk and jazz. Chip’s/Winder (Powell)
LIVE, COUNTING CROWS, BETTIE SERVEERT — Live and Counting Crows are coming off releases that failed to add much to their well-traversed sounds. Loyal fans won’t care, but others, it will want to leave early to beat the traffic. Openers Bettie Serveert are clearly the class of the bill. Their latest album, Private Suit, is a swirling, atmospheric pop cocktail that packs less immediate punch than their previous material but more lasting wallop. Lakewood Amphitheatre (Allen/Peisner)
ERYN MCHUGH — Though her drop-dead looks may cause some to dismiss her, there’s substance to this 21-year-old Atlanta native. Her self-titled debut, while a little slick, finds her running her soulful voice over surprisingly diverse musical terrain, sashaying from pop and country to gospel and soul without ever sounding lost. Eddie’s Attic (Peisner)
DEBELAH MORGAN — While the term “mall tour” rightfully conjures wince-inducing images of Tiffany schlepping to the pimply teens of America, Morgan, a far more talented singer and performer, is using this unusual forum to plug a pretty good new pop/R&B album. Showtime is 3 p.m. Perimeter Mall (Horowitz)
GUINNESS OYSTER FESTIVAL — This high profile benefit for ArtScape features the return of drivin’n’cryin’, performing in Atlanta for the first time this year. Billionaire, momentary 99X fave Dynamite Hack and the rising Brand New Immortals also perform during the day-long fundraiser. Woodruff Park (Smith)
PAUL MCCARTNEY TRIBUTE CD RELEASE PARTY — see Earshot. The Earl (York)
OAKHURST ARTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL — This up-and-coming local neighborhood celebrates its, um, up-and-coming-ness, with an impressively eclectic lineup featuring folkies Kodac Harrison and Blake Guthrie, the modern jazz of the Nu South Creative Ensemble, internationally-acclaimed turntablists Faust & Shortee, Nigerian/reggae/hip-hop outfit D-Day, redneck rockers Truckadelic, and the exotic-sounding, local rock group, Janah. Music starts at 11 a.m. and runs until evening. Harmony Park (Peisner)
SYLVAIN SYLVAIN — It’s not often that the under-21 set get their chance to see a true ’70s punk legend in an intimate club setting, but Sylvain Sylvain — a former New York Doll, who was there when it all started — gives it to ‘em tonight. Echo Lounge (Nicoll)
SATISH VYAS — Satish Vyas is one of the leading exponents of the santoor or dulcimer. He is a top disciple of the renowned santoor expert Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. Accompanying Vyas will be Ramdas Palsule on tabla. Showtime is 6:30 p.m. Georgia Tech Student Center Theater 770-416-8901 (Jones)
DEREK TRUCKS — Trucks is young, committed, intense, and damn if it doesn’t seem like the ghost of Duane Allman is imbedded in that red-hot slide of his. And now as an official “Brother” he’s gotten even better. OK, so his stage presence is about zip and he’s not the most personable frontman, but the guy still exudes tons of low-key charisma, and his band cooks like the Iron Chef. Roxy (Horowitz)
TINA TURNER, JOE COCKER — With more final tours under her glittery micro-mini-skirt than even the Who (although at 62 she looks a hell of a lot better than Townshend these days), the ever-audacious Turner kicks up those famous gams once again, and this, she claims is, you know, the last time. Poor Joe Cocker used ta be a contender, now he can’t even land a major label deal. Philips Arena (Horowitz)
THE TWILIGHT SINGERS — Recorded in New Orleans three years ago, but just released last month after being radically retooled,Twilight As Played by the Twilight Singers is a studio tour de force from head Afghan Whig Greg Dulli’s side project. Complete with multiple singers, layered overdubs and a cushy, soulful, erotic feel meant to approximate influences like Roxy Music’s Avalon and Marvin Gaye’s Let’s Get It On, it sounds hypnotically repetitious on album but could easily play out as aimless and meandering on stage. Still, anyone who’s seen him live knows how much effortless stage presence he has, and if the concept gels, this could be an unforgettable evening. Cotton Club (Horowitz)
