Noted Acts
TYWANNA JO BASKETTE, FLASH THE BANG TIME, FABLE FACTORY, DIANA OBSCURA — Baskette is a Southern Gothic Sweetheart from Nashville, making her out-of-town debut tonight as part two of the Kudzu Film Festival's Green Lantern Showcase. If Claudine Longet was from Tennessee, she'd be Baskette. Flash the Bang Time is an Athens superstar band of unsung '80s heroes, featuring former members of Oh Ok and Mystery Date. Fable Factory echo early and woodsy R.E.M. with a jangly twang. Diana Obscura opens the show with a unique and theatrical set of energetic performance art pieces and classically inspired punk-cello melodies. 40 Watt Club/Athens (Nicoll)
DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND — A wild night for New Orleans funk, with the Meters also in town and entertaining over at the Variety. When the Dirty Dozen get their mojos workin' it's impossible to sit down, let alone walk out on them. Sure they can stroll through a lackluster show, but with a Friday night crowd primed for partying and Smith's comfy atmosphere, this is about as close to high voltage, hardcore, Bourbon Street funk-jazz as you'll get. Smith's Olde Bar (Horowitz)
FUNKY METERS — The name change (from "Meters" to "funky Meters") happened in 1994 and was frankly unnecessary, as this New Orleans ensemble has been synonymous with funk since its late-'60s origins, when it scored Top 10 R&B hits with "Cissy Strut," "Looka-Py-Py" and others. The group disbanded from 1979-89, during which time co-founder Art Neville helped launch the Neville Brothers. The current funky Meters edition includes Neville, bassist/co-founder George Porter Jr., guitarist Brian Stoltz and drummer Russell Batiste Jr. The show includes special guests the Rebirth Brass Band (Friday only), Santa's boyfriend and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. Variety Playhouse (Powell)
LIZARDMEN, BLUE VELVETS — The Merseybeat-boppin' Lizards put on their Beatle boots again for another wild Friday night dance party, with able support from local "supergroup" the Blue Velvets (singer/guitarist Mark Harper of the Bogues and the Ottoman Empire, guitarist James Ford of the Ottomans, bassist John Yoakum of the Raves and drummer David Michaelson of the Vidalias, the Hoods and Georgia Satellites). Despite a massive repertoire of '60s cover songs, the Blue V's will be performing originals tonight. Star Bar (Nicoll/Smith)
SOME SOVIET STATION, SPECTRALUX, TIGER MOUTH — Fresh-faced and youthful punk rockers Some Soviet Station have been creating a serious buzz lately, but be sure to arrive early enough to hear the Velvets-on-PBR roar of Spectralux, who celebrate a CD release tonight. Also on the bill is Tiger Mouth, a band of yet another stripe. The Earl (Nicoll)
STIMULANTS, HELGAS — Twin towers of speedrock power, the Stimulants (all-girl, all-growl) and the Helgas (all-boy, all-noise) make a superb pairing. Dottie's (Nicoll)
TRACY NELSON & THE NIGHTHAWKS — Although the eclectic Nelson is best known for her plucky country/folk-tinged blues, she'll be cranking it up to 11 when fronting one of the roughest, toughest, grittiest, rollicking, bar-busting blues bands in the country. The craggy Nighthawks, now into their 30th year, have paid their dues many times over and still revel in their endless life on the road. It'll be refreshing to hear Nelson's gutsy vocals leading this previously all-boys club, but she sure won't be softening up these gristly guys. It's gonna be a rocking great time as two veteran headliners go toe-to-toe in the intimate club. Blind Willie's (Horowitz)
YOUNG ANTIQUES — The 'Tiques are back in town tonight after a brief jaunt to Athens. This trio offers one of the most satisfying live shows around. Complex in their simplicity, the boys make ya dance and think at the same time. Echo Lounge (Smith)
