SAT/NOVEMBER 4
Noted acts
GEOFF ACHISON — See listing for Nov. 2. Eddie’s Attic (Prusin)
ALKALINE TRIO — Call it emo-core, post-punk or whatever the hell you want, this Chicago threesome turns pathos, self-loathing and heartbreak into dynamic, charging rock ‘n’ roll. Their recent album, Maybe I’ll Catch Fire — a compendium of slightly-too-intimate tales of where it all went wrong — dials up the drama well past 11, but there’s not a bad cut anywhere on it. Echo Lounge (Peisner)
CAROLINE & THE RAMBLERS, CAVE CATT SAMMY — It’s a rumble in L5P tonight with two of the best rockabilly bands around. Headlining the late show tonight (which requires a separate admission from the 8 p.m. Jason Ringenberg set) is sultry-voiced Caroline Hull Engel, backed by her five-star ensemble, the Ramblers. Cave Catt Sammy is a group of young whippersnappers from San Marcos, Tex., who capture the essence of the style and rip it up on stage. Star Bar (James Kelly/Nicoll)
DISCO BISCUITS — Leave the platform heels at home unless you want to end up sprawled on the dance floor faster than Tony Manero on crack after these Philly space-jammers finish their first extended tune. There are plenty of Dead licks here, but they mix them up by adding early Pink Floyd’s interstellar overdrive. With songs, or rather pieces, which run in excess of 20 minutes, the Biscuits will tax the stamina of even the most ambitious patchouli-drenched twirler. They tour with their own lighting director, so expect a far-out multi-media experience, dude. And a long show. Masquerade (Horowitz)
DIDO, DOUGHTY — Ex-Faithless singer Dido’s solo debut was a winning combination of breathy singing, hypnotic trip-hop and melodic jazz/pop/folk, which would have been more impressive if Beth Orton hadn’t gotten there first. Last time through, Dido’s short performance was embarrassingly lacking in stage presence and she seemed bored playing the same songs she’s been slogging nightly for two years. No word on exactly what ex-Soul Coughing leader Doughty will be up to, but if his band’s three terrific albums are any indication, it’ll be more fascinating than watching the snoozy headliner go through her paces. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)
EMORY GAMELAN ENSEMBLE — See Earshot. Performing Arts Studio/Emory (Hutchinson)
THE GLANDS, ONEIDA — The Glands are an Athens recycling bin filled with all the things that made rock great in the ’60s and ’80s. Jangle and rumble meets rattle and hum as Oneida shares the bill with some songs from their Jaguar collection. The Earl (Smith)
KLEZMATICS — In terms of the klezmer revival, which in recent decades brought back a somewhat arcane musical style and made it fresh again, New York’s Klezmatics are something akin to the Beatles. Where many new klezmer groups focus on imitating the classic elements of “Jewish jazz,” the six-piece Klezmatics have taken the style leaps and bounds beyond tradition. On albums such as Jews With Horns and Rhythm and Jews, the group incorporates modern musical elements with humor and daring, while retaining the music’s populist appeal. Rialto Center (Sarig)
LUCKY STRIKE BAND TO BAND 2000 TALENT SEARCH — Dezeray’s Hammer, Film and Modern Hero compete to be voted the favorite and receive $2,500 and a place on a compilation as market champion. Smith’s Olde Bar (Ware)
JASON RINGENBERG — See article. Star Bar (James Kelly)
PEPE ROMERO — Acclaimed classical guitarist Pepe Romero returns to Spivey Hall to perform works, some written specifically for him, by Luis de Milan, Gaspar Sanz, Joaquin Turina and his late father, Celedonion Romero, among others, as part of Spivey’s 10th Anniversary Celebration Series. Spivey Hall/Morrow (Ware)
SOUTHERN MUSIC FESTIVAL/GET OUT TO VOTE RALLY — Taking place on four stages between Auburn and Edgewood Avenues at Woodruff Park, the Southern Music Festival/Get Out To Vote Rally features Frankie Beverly & Maze, the Isley Brothers, Morris Day and the Time, Midnight Star, Lakeside, the Ohio Players, Brick, Cam’ron, Ginuwine, Da Pak, So Plush, Bone Thugs & Harmony and Que-Bo Gold. Attendees are asked to donate canned goods. Noon-10 p.m. Woodruff Park (Ware)
