SUN/FEBRUARY 18
ASYLUM ST. SPANKERS — Did someone say fun? Totally unplugged, unmiked and uncensored, the Spankers sing of sex and drugs, and rock it really old school — like, before electricity. These Austin vaudevillians toss an acoustic mix of ’30s blues, ragtime, lounge, folk, hillbilly and C&W together with fiddle, harmonica, musical saw, washboard and ukulele into a kitchen sink blender and emerge with a suitably wacky concoction. It sure helps to have a lead singer as sexy and magnetic as Christina Marrs, who, along with multi-instrumentalist Wammo, leads this constantly changing large band through an eclectic repertoire. Part medicine show, part midnight movie, the Asylum Street Spankers might trot out some naughty paeans to misbehaving from their fourth album, Spanker Madness, a madcap set of drug ditties played with screwball energy and knee-slapping lyrics. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz/Smith)
ATLANTA CHAMBER PLAYERS — The Players continue their Silver Anniversary celebrations with a 3 p.m. show titled “Timeless,” featuring two rarely heard works: “Quartet for the End of Time” by mid-20th century French visionary/mystic Olivier Messiaen and a piano trio by early 20th century American Romantic composer Arthur Foote. The show also celebrates the release of the players’ new CD, Footeprints, which includes the Foote trio. Rialto Center (Falstaff)
CAFETERIA — This open-ended Athens group, led by singer/songwriter Taylor Joiner, released a CD, Knee Deep, last year on Jack Logan and Kelly Keneipp’s Backburner Records. While the disc’s low-key alt-country arrangements don’t jump out as immediately distinctive, the consistent quality of the songs and performances wins out in the end. Joiner brings his group to the live stage for a rare Atlanta show at this week’s “Sunday Sippin’ Parlor,” beginning at 5 p.m. Somber Reptile (Sarig)
DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE, THE JEALOUS SOUND, THE AND/ORS — See Death Cab and Jealous Sound article. Opening band the And/Ors play some seriously catchy garage indie rawk with just the right amount of intentional dischords — a little jangle and a little mangle. The Earl (Ware)
MASTERS OF PERSIAN MUSIC — See article. Post Theatre/Lovett School (Kaliss)
PETER SEARCY, PATTERSON HOOD, KEVIN LAWSON, JOHNNY IRION, — This “Songwriters-in-the-Round” event showcases semi-local pretty boy Searcy, a Matthew Sweet/Paul Westerberg wannabe whose 15 minutes of fame seem to have begun expiring rapidly after last year’s Music Midtown. More promising is the presence of Drive-By Truckers frontman Patterson Hood, a perennially pugnacious tunesmith whose legacy (and seductive Southern drawl) belong to the ages. Also performing are Kevin Lawson (ex-Three Lost Souls), the archetypal Lonesome Rock Star, along with his South Carolina-based equivalent, Johnny Irion (ex-Queen Sarah, ex-Dillon Fence). Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)
WEBB WILDER — Cool: A national artist, a small roadside tavern and an early 4 p.m. matinee show. Time enough for a working adult to get buzzed, see the show and still be bright-eyed on Monday morning. Wilder, of course, is no stranger to Georgia. He’s played nearly every club with (or without) electricity in the area. His hybrid brand of rock and country is a joy to behold and he takes nothing seriously, especially himself. Chip’s/Winder (Smith)
