THURS/MARCH 15
BLISS — Chocolate Soul presents a regular Thursday night performance session of live instrumental soul, acid jazz, hip-hop and drum ‘n’ bass featuring rotating bands and guest DJs. Studio Central (Ware)
DURAN DURAN — See listing for March 14. Earthlink.Live (York)
GOOD FRIDAY EXPERIMENT, CHOCOLATE KISS — Good Friday Experiment are a band made of some folks from Atlanta’s Red Lab Studios. As part of MJQ’s “New Rock Night,” they’re celebrating the release of their first CD, Bottom of a Pail Breaking Through, a collection of almost acoustic-pop that’s airy without being flimsy, in the vein of Ida and Idaho. Wet, reverb-drenched vocals shiver over gentle sounds. Chocolate Kiss play the other end of the emo spectrum, with uptempo indie rock and a sense of humor. MJQ (Ware)
JACK WEST, NO RIVER CITY, THE SILVERTONES — As Jack West, the ex-Christopher Robin trio dons big hats and radically changes horses from prog-rock to country-twang without somehow getting trampled in the process (see Earshot). The other two bands are similarly C&W oriented and work with West’s Robin Salmon in his FMG Studios. The Earl (Horowitz)
LAGWAGON, THE VANDALS — Fat Wreck Chords act Lagwagon have been churning out NOFX-influenced pop-punk for skaters since the early ’90s. But Lagwagon don’t have to play double-time to cover up a lack of mature material. More textured than most contemporaries — though no less energetic — Lagwagon have included a member of the Posies and a fair share of emotional honesty at times, so ask the guy next to you with the mohawk and spiked collar if he wants to discuss his feelings. The Vandals are punk stalwarts with a deliciously skewed take on that whole angst thing. They compose tight, memorable punk anthems with a hyper-cynical sense of humor. Like a Dennis Leary routine set to music. Masquerade (Ware/Hutchinson)
CARY PIERCE — As part of the rootsy Jackopierce, this Texas-based songwriter built a dedicated following. Now solo, Pierce is rebuilding his support, banking on old friends and recent converts to come out again for an evening of warm, brown music. Smith’s Olde Bar (Smith)
POPROCKET — North Carolina trio Poprocket were among picks for best bands of 2000 in CL’s sister paper in Charlotte. This high-energy ensemble plays, you guessed it, pop-rock. Songs on their five-song EP Some Songs are short and sizzle, held down by steady beats and picked up by earnestly delivered vocals. Also on the bill are fellow Charlotte outfit the Interstellars, who lean toward a more moody, trip-hop style. Star Bar (Nicoll/Ware/Sarig)
SMUT PEDDLERS — Hip-hop talent runs deep in the Smut Peddlers. DJ Mighty Mi creates greasy, sophisticated beats that drop like a piano from a mover’s defective pulley. MCs Mr. Eon and Cage (aka Alex) both brandish vocal skills that can stand up to many of their higher profile Rawkus labelmates. And yet the collective as a whole suffers from its cartooonish porn-obsession formula. Variety Playhouse (Hutchinson)
SUB:MARINE SHOWCASE — Johnny Ether presents an evening featuring the films and music — past and present — of local label sub:marine. Sub:marine’s flagship band, underwater, who combine passionate vocals with darkly nuanced music, perform. Fountainhead (Ware)
