Sound Menu April 04 2001 Tues

ANGIE APARO — Aparo comes home to dazzle the college kids. The golden-throated local folkie has a major-label CD that’s at times lovely, other times misguided, in its grab for modern-rock crossover. Robert Ferst Center/Ga. Tech (Sarig)

MICHAEL BURKS — Often compared to Albert King, with whom he shares a Flying V guitar and a uniquely soulful vocal style, the Arkansas-based Burks has just released a terrific album on Alligator records that edges him into hallowed Luther Allison territory. Biting, meaty blues licks with a hefty chunk of R&B — a little bit Memphis, a little bit Chicago and all ruggedly sincere. Good stuff. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)

CHAD — Riding the wave of free publicity he received following the presidential election (sorry), Burlington, Vt., folk-rocker Chad hits the road with former Jerry Garcia Band members, Bob Coons and Martin Holland. Chad’s obligatory variation on the folk singer-songwriter equation is an up-tempo, highly rhythmic and sometimes silly “world party” vibe. Smith’s Olde Bar (Hutchinson)

MJ COLE, BOBBLE — A classically trained ex-jungle producer, the UK’s MJ Cole (see Club to Death, p. 83) has been getting major stateside press on the strength of his first full-length, Sincere, a prime example of UK garage. Also known as two-step, it’s a genre with a jittery rhythm bridging house and drum ‘n’ bass, with rubbery, soulful bass lines and vocals straight out of R&B. Hear the future now, with local DJs Bobble and others stepping up to the tables as well. MJQ Concourse (Ware)

CHRIS CUTLER — One-man band Chris Cutler makes the most of his drum kit, creating textured rhythms and exotic sounds. See article. Earthshaking Music (Khalid)

JAZZ JAM SESSION — Trumpeter Danny Harper is host and anchor of Atlanta’s finest jazz jam. Bring your axe and your best chops, if you dare. Churchill Grounds (Powell)

KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD BAND, DOUBLE TROUBLE — The comely Louisiana youngster punches out hard-edged, Stevie Ray Vaughn-like blues/rock with tough leads, lotsa volume and spotlight-stealing presence. Soul busting ex-Storyville singer Manfred Milligan adds stinging spice to the resilient backbeat generated by Double Trouble’s bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris Layton. Shepherd plays on their album, so look for on-stage mix and matching. Tabernacle (Horowitz)
