Sound Menu April 25 2001 Thur

ACTIONSLACKS — A few vitamins and minerals short of standard power-pop chemistry, Bay-Area rockers Actionslacks fast-walk through their songs with a humble, moody energy. While occasionally betraying a familiar sense of West Coast pop whimsy, vocalist Tim Scanlin steers toward more earnest subject matter and delivery. MJQ Concourse (Hutchinson)

ANOTHER MAN DOWN — Well-connected local modern rockers Another Man Down celebrate the release of their full-length debut, Dangerous and Close. Smith’s Olde Bar (Sarig)

ATHFEST 2001 CD RELEASE PARTY — While AthFest is still two months away, Trunkfire, Flash to Bang Time, Boulevard, Favorite and Jet By Day perform in celebration of the AthFest 2001 CD compilation’s release. They all appear on the disc, along with the likes of Five-Eight, Math and the Eskimos. 40 Watt Club/Athens (Sarig)

DISCO BISCUITS — Oh brave new world! The cross pollination of seemingly disparate musical styles continues unabated, as the Disco Biscuits fuse jam-band noodling with dance floor blips and beeps. You either get it or you don’t, but like their hairier counterparts it’s probably best experienced live. Roxy (Robertson)

JOHNNY’S HIDEAWAY 22nd BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION — Atlanta’s favorite nightclub for big kids turns 22, and in classic Johnny’s form, kitsch has a headlining spot on this evening’s “impersonator-rific” musical bill. For those who said it couldn’t be done, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra will set aside personal differences and death in toasting the Atlanta institution with a My Way duet. Johnny’s Hideaway (Hutchinson)

KINGSIZED, TELEPATHICS — The Echo transforms into a swanky Latin lounge with Mike Geier leading his Kingsized men through a set of suave covers appropriate for the evening’s swinging theme. The Telepathics provide Nuggets-style hijinks as the know-it-all trio open the show with a mini-dance party of psychotic craziness. Echo Lounge (Smith)

MICHAEL MCDERMOTT, JODIE MANROSS — Folk-rocker McDermott appears on the soundtrack to the upcoming John Malkovich movie Knockaround Guys. The Chicago-based singer/songwriter offers dramatic slice-of-life snippets of conversations during his vivid character studies. Jodie Manross of Knoxville gives an intimate take on pop/folk with soulful vocals and a liberal amount of blues flourishes. Eddie’s Attic (Smith)

OPEN MIC NITE — A relatively new arrival on the live music scene, Anthony’s Music Hall outside Decatur is attempting to crossbreed Eddie’s Attic’s highly competitive open mic with the more laidback style of the Red Light Café. Winners of the weekly contest qualify for a chance to win $500 in a semi-annual Open Mic Encore. Sign up by calling 404-373-2182, or at the door starting at 7 p.m. Anthony’s Music Hall (Sarig)

THE PHARCYDE, MINAMINA GOODSONG, THE HEMISPHERE — South Central L.A.’s mellow, melodic hip-hop group Pharcyde have lasted 10 years, but just because they’ve got a retrospective doesn’t mean they’re simply reliving the past. This ensemble, who helped pave the way for groups like Jurassic 5, are forging ahead, touring on their last album, Plain Rap, as well as works in progress. See Flashback. Also on the bill are local Kaleidoscope-associated rap duo Minamina Goodsong, laid-back dark-alley cats the Hemisphere and interlude-providing DJ T’Challa. Masquerade (Ware)
