Sound Menu June 13 2001 Wed

BIG WRECK — Sounding a bit like Creed, Three Doors Down and the like, these Boston boys definitely have a rockin’ edge. Pounding drums, plucked keyboards and Ian Thornley’s distinctive vocals make for some pretty catchy tunes. Smith’s Olde Bar (Keel)

CAPPADONNA — This ghetto-poet member of the Wu Tang Clan family just blazed his second solo album, The Yin & the Yang, which takes the listener on a journey through the spiritual and the carnal. Cappadonna’s mission is to speak truth with rough lyrics and hard beats, and this album does that — touching on the whole spectrum of the human condition. EarthLink Live (Bethea)

LAUREN FINCHAM — Equally deft with a turn of phrase, a sustained vocal note and a strum of her guitar, Fincham is a confident and precise entertainer whose work is well worth seeking out. Making a rare live appearance in the Druid Hills area, this heavenly voiced Georgia singer-songwriter performs as part of the fine arts center’s new Coffeehouse Series. Callanwolde (Nicoll)

BEBEL GILBERTO — Her debut Tanto Tempo already is one of the top-selling Brazilian albums of all time Stateside, its savvy but restrained trip-hop and electronica overtones help her reach a wide constituency. Then there was her “Girl From Ipanema” contribution to that Kenny G album. Mind you, she should know a thing or two about bossa nova, her dad Joao Gilberto co-founded the genre (with Tom Jobim) in 1958. Variety Playhouse (Falstaff)

NIGHTHAWKS — Washington, D.C.’s hardest-working roots combo keeps on keeping on almost 30 years down the line. Amazingly, they stay fresh and vital, slinging out blues and rocking R&B with the casual professionalism gained through years of playing any dive with a stage. They’ll never get rich or famous, but these journeymen deliver uncompromising music that’ll leave you sweaty, satisfied and convinced they’re the world’s best band — at least for tonight. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)

SALOME’S WISH, VIETNAM — Ditching her Stimulatingly fun pop at the door, Sue Stimulant and her Wishful crew continue to raise a ghostly racket as their residency continues. Tonight, the early ’80s Atlanta new-wave band Vietnam make a rare reunion appearance. Star Bar (Smith)
