Sound Menu June 13 2001 Fri
BROOKS & DUNN, TOBY KEITH, MONTGOMERY GENTRY, KEITH URBAN, CLETUS T. JUDD — As the country music industry laments its loss of sales power over the past few years, revue-style concerts such as this and the recent George Strait tour have become quite popular. Loaded up with testosterone, most of these acts sound more rock than country, and the obnoxious comedian Judd is the emcee. Spare yourself the boredom, stay home and watch reruns. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Kelly)
DOMINO KINGS — See Record Reviews. Echo Lounge (Kelly)
FRANTIC FLATTOPS, FORTY-FIVES — Unchained '50s-style rockabilly is in order when the Flattops take the stage. Be sure, though, to arrive early enough to enjoy some '60s-style garage rock from the Forty-Fives, whose name is drawn from the old 7-inch vinyl format, but whose power evokes the military handgun caliber. Star Bar (Nicoll)
HELL MACH FOUR, SCI-FU — Moodswing Records' prime movers Hell Mach Four have been working on their sound for seven years, currently moving through a jazzed-up Jesus Lizard, eclectic Dischord style. Tight chord changes, emotional melodies and bursts of throbbing bass leave all necks sore. Athens quartet Sci-Fu also have come a long way, from metal to more experimental. Also opening are the Remuxers. Bring yer sweatbands, this will be one energetic show. The Earl (Khalid)
MANDORICO — There are delicious south-of-the-border flavorings sprinkled liberally throughout the fiery Latin dance-rock of this solid Atlanta combo. For a little spice into your nightlife — just be sure to wear your most comfortable shoes. Your feet will be smolderin'! Smith's Olde Bar (Nicoll)
MARY MARY, GENERATION J — Popular gospel/R&B duo Mary Mary headline a free concert brought to you by Creflo Dollar's World Changers empire. Opening act Generation J is a family quartet that records for local label Arrow Records, a division of World Changers run by Dollar's wife Taffi. World Changers Church International/College Park (Sarig)
MORBID ANGEL — Hailing from the infernal, bubbling pits of, er, Tampa, Morbid Angel continue grinding out their cheerful metallic odes to death, pestilence and horned goat-gods. The converted will doubtlessly flock to the show, leaving the rest of us to ponder the irony of the Sunshine State's remarkable ability to produce such a disproportionate number of death metal bands. PlanetJam Cotton Club (Robertson)
QUEENIE MULLINIX, RICHARD BICKNELL — Tonight's double-bill showcases two strong local singer/songwriters. Mullinix evokes a classic country/pop sound, while Bicknell relies on a more straightforward acoustic-rock approach. Anthony's Music Hall (Sarig)
DONNY OSMOND — See Show 'n' Tell. Fox Theatre (York)
REPARTEE — With cool beats and melodic rhythms, Repartee's sway-your-shoulders brand of jazz has a touch of Miles Davis and a hint of Medeski, Martin and Wood spice. This trio, while not as experimental as they are original, combine the best elements of classic, quality, improvisational jazz. Apache Café (Mossman)
SKROL, EINLEITUNGSZEIT, SCHLOSS TEGAL, JOE CHRIST — Brutal in its approach, yet glorious in its symphonic grandeur, the sounds of Skrol (Czech Republic) recall the monolithic ambience of early Laibach and dark oratories of The Moon Lay Hidden Beneath A Cloud. Similarly, Slovakia's Einleitungszeit fills hidden chambers with thick percussion and coarse sheets of deep sonic madness. Schloss Tegal (from the U.S.) renders alien sounds even darker via manipulation. Local filmmaker Joe Christ screens some of his work as well. Eyedrum (Foy)
STOOL SAMPLE — If your memories of hardcore punk involve youthful idealism, political action and a strong work ethic, consider local trio Stool Sample an extremely rude awakening. Tonight the group celebrates its debut full-length, Everything Went Brown, which collects dynamically challenged old and new material focused exclusively on violent sex, scatology, pedophilia, incest and a level of misogyny that makes Eminem look like Tori Amos. With a measure of irony or subversive commentary, it would be merely tasteless; void of that, it's beyond obscene. 9 Lives Saloon (Sarig)
VERTICAL HORIZON, WILL HOGE, MODERN HERO — Even diehard VH1 fans are probably tired of seeing their heroes come through town yet again, flogging the same old songs from their played-out, two-year-old major label debut. But the show's free, and those who get there early can catch firebrand Hoge, whose anthemic rocking is perfect for outdoor stages. The local openers have a handful of catchy soul/rock tunes too, and singer/songwriter Jeffrey Butts exudes enough stage presence to turn heads. Centennial Olympic Park (Horowitz)
WYNONNA — The younger Judd, who plays for the wine and brie crowd on the north side of town, has an amazing voice but does some of the lamest faux-pop material ever heard. She used to sing great country songs with her mama, but in the past few years she seems to be searching for her own identity, with no luck. She scares me. Chastain Park Amphitheater (Kelly)
