Sound Menu June 20 2001 Sun
ATHFEST — For details, visit www.athfest.com. Also see Earshot. downtown Athens (Sarig)
ATLANTA PRIDE FESTIVAL — For details, see www.atlantapride.org. Piedmont Park (Keel)
DIONNE FARRIS, JONZ — As she continues putting together her long-awaited solo return, former Arrested Development singer Farris brings her gutsy soul-rock to Buckhead. Opening is promising newcomer Jonz, whose groovy acoustic soul just may be in the right place at the right time to ride India Arie’s coattails out of Atlanta’s neo-soul scene. Celebrity Rock Café (Sarig)
FISHBONE — Fishbone have been pasting together funk, rock, metal and ska for so long it’s a bit of a mystery they don’t get name-checked more often than they do. Returning from semi-obscurity with their best album in over a decade (The Psychotic Friends Nuttwerx), the band’s shows are legendary marathons of pure manic energy. PlanetJam Cotton Club (Robertson)
RONNIE LAWS — Saxman and occasional flutist Laws became one of the original ’70s jazz-crossover acts by adding vocals and elements of funk and soul to his easy-going blowing. Although heavily influenced by Eddie Harris, to whom he recorded a tribute album, and Grover Washington Jr., Laws can easily slip into rote commercial pop or sizzling Isley Brothers covers. Taboo Bistro & Bar (Horowitz)
AKBAR ERIC MANOLSON — Local pianist Akbar Eric Manolson performs his piano composition based around “The Aramaic Prayer,” an ancient version of the Lord’s Prayer as it appeared in the language Jesus would have spoken (translated, that is, through a New Age slant). The 4 p.m. concert is free. Clifton Presbyterian Church/369 Connecticut Ave. (Sarig)
PAUL MITCHELL 2001 COMMUNITY JAZZ AWARDS — See Earshot, p. 83. Fernbank Museum (Powell)
RIVERKEEPER BENEFIT CD RELEASE PARTY — Sure, there’s already been a release party for this comp of local singer/songwriters, but it’s for a good cause, so who’s counting? Just about everyone who contributes to the disc — including Kodac Harrison, Mudcat, Bill Kahler and Angela Motter — is slated to perform, starting at 7 p.m., in support of the Upper Chattahoochee Riverkeeper’s attempts to clean up and protect our water. Eddie’s Attic (Sarig)
RUSTIC OVERTONES — Portland, Maine’s Rustic Overtones recall golden-era Fishbone teamed up with timely hip-hop sensibilities as well as good old rock. The Tommy Boy recording artist’s new release features guest appearances by Funkmaster Flex and David Bowie — a combination that says a lot about their stylistic breadth.
