Sound Menu June 20 2001 Tues

CALEXICO, THE GLANDS, EMPIRE STATE — The band judged “most likely to score the next John Sayles film,” Calexico sports two members of the legendary avant-country band Giant Sand, but it’s no mere side project. Fresh off the release of the substantial EP Even My Sure Things Fall Through, Calexico plays headliner to The Glands, Athens’ genre-jumbling indie-pop pop band. This show is sure to turn out the pocket protector-wearing indie crowd, especially since Athens’ own Harry Partch-ian popsters Empire State open. Echo Lounge (Griffis)

OVAL — See Oval in Record Reviews, p. 87. Faff warms the room up. It’s an early show, starting precisely at 8 p.m. The “Ladies Night” dance-party follows. The Earl (Ware)

STRANGEFOLK — Don’t let the Burlington, Vt., license plate throw you, Strangefolk is only a jam band in part. When not wailing out snaking instrumental throwdowns, the rootsy five-piece knows how to tighten it up a notch. While most always working from that good-vibe, upbeat compositional style, their musical chest beats with a melodic, country-inflected heart.
