Sound Menu June 27 2001 Wed

GLASSCANDY AND THE SHATTERED THEATRE, BLACK MAN WHITE MAN DEAD MAN, ELECTROSLEEP INTERNATIONAL, SUBTONIX — Glass Candy singer Ida No’s terminal glamour — like an ultra-young Siouxsie Sioux from back before goth was just another convenient tag — suits her band’s simplistic primal rhythm quite well. The purposefully opprobrious Black Man White Man Dead Man is all raw screams and ugly churning. Local troublemakers Electrosleep International and San Francisco all-girl punk/new wave outfit Subtonix also perform. Call 404-522-4257 for info. Squaresville/695 Woodward Ave. (Foy)

BONEY JAMES, JEFF LORBER — Smooth jazz doesn’t get much smoother than this double bill of accomplished fuzak musicians whose sweet, soulful and slightly funky sounds are a perfect compliment to the atmosphere of the venue. With all the talking and eating, those who want to actually listen to James’ sassy reed work and Lorber’s keyboards are advised to bring a CD player with headphones. Chastain Park Amphitheater (Horowitz)

JOURNEY, PETER FRAMPTON, JOHN WAITE — Latter-day classic rock from a trio of acts that tended to get more radio play than respect. Bic lighter (and Steve Perry) not included. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Sarig)

JUNCTION 18 — Flying low on the commercial radar, Junction 18 has the kind of ear-friendly melodic punk vocals and mid-tempo momentum that have made household names out of groups like Blink-182 and Green Day. It’ll be interesting to see if this punk act goes the route of street cred or Club Med. Under the Couch (Hutchinson)

LIZ MELENDEZ — The hardest-working female blues guitar ace in Atlanta, Liz Melendez’s latest CD, Mercy, features eight originals ranging in style from Stevie Ray to Santana, with more traditional stuff and funk jams mixed in. Her band performs four times this week on the outskirts of town. Darwin’s (Sarig)

SHELDON — Though fairly formulaic hard rock, Sheldon is notable for its powerful rhythm section and vocals. If only the clichéd, uninspired lyrics could match those strengths. Dark Horse Tavern (Mossman)

SPECTRALUX, SALOME’S WISH — Salome’s Wish concludes their one-month stand tonight with another set of Stimulant-fueled goth rock sharp enough to behead Baptists at 20 paces. Their guests include Spectralux, whose thunder-boomer rock ‘n’ roll sounds can topple tall columns faster than Samson’s biceps. Tourmaline rounds out the triple bill. Star Bar (Nicoll)
