Sound Menu June 27 2001 Sat
ALIEN CRIME SYNDICATE — West Coast punk veteran Joe Reineke has found a new home in this punk/pop outfit. Reineke’s vocals have that weakened, J. Mascis moaning quality and are complemented appropriately by the indie/punk charge of the group. ACS takes it one step further, however, with a strong ear for stylistic gear shifting. From ol’ skool beatbox flares to sci-fi space loop garnishes and airy ambient harmonies, this band inspires expectational guesswork. Caledonia Lounge/Athens (Hutchinson)
CORNDOGORAMA 2001 — This year’s “musical odyssey” of local indie-rock bands and corndogs gets under way at 1 p.m. and runs till 2:45 a.m. — all for $5. The line-up is: Low Life Quartet (1 p.m); Girl Chris (1:45 p.m.); Billy Wright (2:30 p.m.); Van Herion (3:15 p.m.); Sound Device (4 p.m.); Chocolate Kiss (4:45 p.m.); Red Level Eleven (5:30 p.m.); Husky (6:30 p.m.); Remurxers (7:15 p.m.); Haricot Vert (8 p.m.); Rizzudo (8:45 p.m.); Rock Coaches (9:30 p.m.); American Dream (10:15 p.m.); Drill Team (11 p.m.); Copa Vance (11:45 p.m.); Heinous Beinfang (12:30 a.m.); Protozoa Rex (1:15 a.m.); Mr. Brimage (2:15 p.m.). Also see Earshot. The Earl (Sarig)
DODD FERRELLE, GRETA LEE BAND — As favorite local country singer Greta Lee and band play a set in preparation for the August release of their new CD, You Must Be Present to Win, fast-rising Athens songwriter makes a rare Atlanta appearance in support. While also a member of Tinfoil Stars, Ferrelle’s excellent roots-rock solo debut, A Carriage on the Hill, earned him some well-deserved recognition with two Athens Music Awards nominations. Anthony’s Music Hall (Sarig)
GARGANTUA, THE RUNS, EVILS — Big. Fast. Loud. Star Bar (Nicoll)
HONEYMAGNOLIA — This week’s neo-soul happening in Little Five Points features local vocalist/songwriter Algebra Blessett, a former back-up singer for everyone from Monica to Joi and Laurea who’s now stepping out on her own. Live funk-soul band FreeStyle and Iyalocha featuring Christine Horn also perform. For more info, contact honeymagnolia@aol.com. 7 Stages (Sarig)
MICHELLE MALONE, GARY STIER — Malone is a powerhouse singer/songwriter who’s equally at home with an acoustic ballad or a majestic rock tune — and who’s written many memorable examples of both in her time. Opening act Gary Stier is an aspiring Gram Parsons-wannabe who once operated under the name Gary Steer (and, prior to that, fronted the much-missed combo Lonesome Jones). Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
JOHN MAYER — See Record Reviews. Roxy (Horowitz)
LIZ MELENDEZ — See listing for June 27. Pepper’s/Riverdale (Sarig)
NEVILLE BROTHERS, ANGELIQUE KIDJO — Even when New Orleans’ premier music-making family walks through a show, there’s enough steaming soul, R&B, jazz and funk to last a whole summer. When they really get inspired, it’s closer to a religious experience. Either way, you win. Opener Kidjo adds sass and sex to her spicy Afro/world beat concoction, making this a killer bill. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Horowitz)
BALLY SAGOO — Parliament Productions and NASHA Entertainment presents New Delhi-born, British-bred Bally Sagoo, one of the leading producers of accessible club, dub and soul music. Traditional and contemporary Indian film scores with bhangra, hip-hop and reggae elements are combined with equal parts brashness and balance. DJs Assassin (Chicago) and Rubel (Atlanta) also spin. Tickets are available online at desivibes.com. Earthlink Live (Ware)
SAMMIE, DEBELAH MORGAN, CO-ED — Dallas Austin’s teen protégé Sammie and local vocal group Co-Ed — whose multi-gender membership offers a new twist to the genre, though its music doesn’t — join lite-pop singer Debelah Morgan for a friendly swing through urban pop. Six Flags (Sarig)
SECTOR 12 — Studio Central hosts a space station-themed party showcasing some of Atlanta’s best hard house and hip-hop DJs. Ulises, H.Y.S.T. and junglist crew Sub.catalyst spin and toast, while PlayStation2 games are shown on giant screens and Big Stack lighting presents a “Northern Lights” show. Tag team turntablists Faust & Shortee also spin, previewing tracks from their upcoming release, Digital Soul, as well as laying down B-boy breaks for “The Burn Unit” and any breakers who care to challenge them. Studio Central (Ware)
UNDERWATER — Local electronic-pop outfit underwater call it quits after tonight’s final show. While individual members will continue with the side projects (including Gaijin and Larvae) they’ve pursued in recent years, Atlanta loses one of its more promising bands, with its comfortable combination of pop-friendly songs and progressive-minded grooves.
