Sound Menu June 27 2001 Wed week out

ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA — Directed by Robert Spano, the ASO presents patriotic favorites such as “The Star Spangled Banner,” “Patriotic Sing-Along” and “Stars and Stripes Forever” to honor Independence Day. The day’s festivities kick off with the Salute 2 America parade at 1 p.m. and conclude with fireworks bursting in air at 9:30 p.m. Centennial Park (Keel)

BENEFIT FOR DONNIE MCCORMICK — See listing for Tues., July 3. Tonight’s schedule includes Slim Fatz, Bo Weevil, Mudcat, the Breeze Kings, King Johnson, Robert Page, Eddie Tigner leading the Northside Big Band and others. Northside Tavern (Keel)

OCELOT, HARICOT VERT — Atlanta-based Moodswing Records celebrates July 4 with a record-release extravaganza. Opener Haricot Vert’s name and half its lyrics are French. But the group’s debut release, Les Moyennes Des Folklore, recorded with Brian Paulson (Slint, Polvo, Seam fame) at Atlanta’s Zero Return studio, sounds more like it’s from the land of Indie Rock, Chapel Hill. Headlining, local instrumentalists Ocelot shoot off their quiet storm on a night of independence. See Earshot. Star Bar (Harold)

NATHAN SHEPPARD Son of a Baptist minister, Sheppard’s musical tastes have evolved from church hymns to a unique combination of soulful acoustic folk-rock. His latest album from New York-based Lost Cat Records, Different Places, showcases Sheppard’s unique vocals, catchy melodies and introspective lyrics. A nice break from formulaic mass-produced music. Luby’s Sports Bar/Lawrenceville (Mossman)
