Sound Menu July 04 2001 Tues
BRAIN SURGEONS — Former Blue Oyster Cult drummer and songwriter Albert Bouchard trades in his (don’t fear the) reaper’s sickle for a scalpel with this new outfit. While the Brain Surgeons opt for a leaner, more punk-informed sound, some of the tell-tale classic rock trappings remain — the melodic hooks, the lush vocal harmonies, and, of course, the stoic cowbell, consistent and dependable like so much spring dew. Somber Reptile (Hutchinson)
DEPECHE MODE, POE — See Depeche Mode in Record Reviews, p.76. Like her Southern gothic namesake, Poe creates eerily meaningful lyrical poetry. While pop stardom might seem incongruous with cathartic journeys of self-identity, Poe’s most recent release, Haunted, is an unlikely combination of the two. The album pairs an ongoing dialogue between her and her late father’s voice with catchy beats and slick pop production. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Hutchinson)
GRAMMY GOSPEL & CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN MUSIC SUMMIT — The Atlanta chapter of the Recording Academy hosts writers and performers in the Christian music industry. The event begins with a panel discussion with industry big wigs followed by performances by artists Natalie Grant, Out of Eden, Babie Mason, Mark Shultz, Superchoir and John Tesh. EarthLink Live (Keel)
RAW POWER, THE X-IMPOSSIBLES — When it comes to hindend-scorching Italian punk rock, the only real choice is Raw Power. They’ve been around for 20 years, and they play with the kind of energy that would wear most bands out in 20 minutes. Not to mention they have that inscrutable Euro-cheesy edge that’s just so darn lovable in its artificial-harmonic, pick-sliding beauty. They share the bill with local garage punkers on the rise, the X-Impossibles. 9 Lives Saloon (Hutchinson)
