G3 — Those in thrall to technical prowess are directed to the G3 tour. Featuring Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Dream Theatre’s John Petrucci, the show is a shameless exhibition of Herculean guitar pyrotechnics. Though some may raise the old virtuosity-versus-soul debate, the converted won’t give a damn as their heroes bend strings, caress frets and, ahem, stroke their whammy bars. Tabernacle (Robertson)

KRISTIN HERSH, KITTY SNYDER — Best known for her unsettlingly stark work as leader of Throwing Muses, Hersh has long been a solo act, recently touring with Athenian Vic Chesnutt. The equally talented Kitty Snyder, a former Athens resident, opens with a captivating set of emotional tunes at this special 7 p.m. show. Echo Lounge (Smith)
DUANE JARVIS, GRETA LEE — Part of the Nashville scene that doesn’t wear cowboy hats or show belly buttons, Jarvis lets his music do the talking. This singer/songwriter throws in a bit of rocking soul and packs a lot of energy into every tune. Local honky-tonk gal Greta Lee presents a batch of new tunes from her upcoming CD You Must be Present to Win. Should be a good combination. Smith’s Olde Bar (J. Kelly)

MAZE FEATURING FRANKIE BEVERLY — Less freaky than Funkadelic, yet not the polished pop of Earth, Wind & Fire, Maze was a fixture on the R&B charts in the late ’70s and early ’80s. With Frankie Beverly’s throaty croon leading this tight-knit ensemble, Maze churns out old-school live soul/funk with passion and down-home enthusiasm. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Horowitz)
REEL BIG FISH, GOLDFINGER, ZEBRAHEAD, HOME GROWN, RX BANDITS — Depending on your tolerance for third-wave (and let’s face it, second-rate) ska-punk, this bill is either your version of rock nirvana or a hellish reminder of why you consciously avoid skateboarders. Of all the bands, only Zebrahead actually stands out, though this is due more to their musical inclinations (a thoroughly unimaginative hybrid of metal, rock and rap) than an actual ability to do anything remotely original. SHARKS AND MINNOWS, BORN TO PLEASE, BOSS — Sharks and Minnows play jangly and passionate rock as seen through Mould and Westerberg-tinted sunglasses. Born to Please, who jokingly refer to themselves as “the band your dog loves to fantasize about while making No. 2,” aren’t crappy at all. Their pleasingly explosive rock rumble is led by the whisper-to- a-scream vocals of Jeri Waynick. Boss present a no-gimmicks set of loud, aggressive “trench rock.” The Earl (Smith)
