MOE. — Moe. successfully controls its own career. After flirting with a major label and touring with the Furthur Festival, the band releases its own CDs and grows at its desired rate. They’ve gained a nice following and a rare level of integrity. From bluegrass to screaming dual guitar leads, no other band hits the note like moe. The two-night stand, part of Z93’s Dunhams Summer Jams Series (see Earshot, p. 83), also features the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Robert Walter’s 20th Congress. Masquerade Music Park (Prusin)
TONY BENNETT WITH THE ASO — Talk about a real survivor. Even an irony-laced, MTV-endorsed flirtation with Gen-X popularity couldn’t tarnish Bennett’s sterling reputation a few years back. He remains the crooner’s crooner, a testament to great talent and impeccable taste (no duets with Eminem for this guy). With an intrinsic feel for what makes a song really swing, Bennett is a class act all the way. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Robertson)
BULLY, DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS, SHANNON TANNER — Bully is the living incarnation of downtown Atlanta’s underdog street spirit, a metallic rock band with a voice that’s equal parts rust, rat poison and biscuit batter. The Drive-Bys are their rural equivalent, rockin’ rednecks still stunned about losing Ronnie Van Zant. Balancing all this rage and angst is heavenly voiced diva Shannon Tanner, drifting like a musical Scarlet O’Hara amid the blood and carnage of Confederate defeat. Star Bar (Nicoll)
DERRICK CARTER, MARK FARINA — DJ Derrick Carter has been releasing singles since the late ’80s, but really gained deserved notoriety when Chicago house came back in vogue in the ’90s. Carter’s sets aren’t all disco and divas, however, they also incorporate techno and tribal rhythms. San Francisco’s Mark Farina, originally from Chicago, gained a reputation on Om Records with a laid-back, jazzy mix of downtempo house dubbed Mushroom Jazz. Live, Farina can get much more disco-oriented, pumping the crowd to be anything but downtempo. Local deep house DJs Kolia and Kevin O of Lush and Nomenclature Museum spin as well. JENNIFER DANIELS, RACHAEL SAGE, TANYA SAVORY, SEAN SMITH, CHRISTOPHER WILLIAMS — Eddie’s welcomes five geographically divergent singer/songwriters. Jennifer Daniels, from Lookout Mountain, Tenn., is a charming and talented alternative folk singer; Tanya Savory is a folk/pop singer from Louisville, Ky.; Sean Smith is an acoustic folk “poet” from Chattanooga, Tenn. Along with Christopher Williams of Cambridge, Mass., New Yorker Rachel Sage rounds out the diverse evening. Sage invokes musical emotion that’s powerfully dramatic without going over the top. A veteran of Lilith Fair and former road partner of Ani DiFranco, Sage is another student of the righteous babe school, producing and releasing albums on her own Mpress Records label. DJ ICEY — Mirage presents Florida’s undisputed king of funky breaks. DJ Icey has been making crowds dance the slurp for more than 10 years. The man credited with bringing the Chemical Brothers for their first North American appearance, Icey has gained as much a reputation for his original Zone productions as the seamless, bouncy sets he spins, which include a mix of well-known anthems and underground boilers. Mirage resident DJ Nasir also uses this opportunity to celebrate the release of a mix CD. Velvet Room (Ware)
ESKIMOS, YOUNG ANTIQUES, LODESTAR — The Athens-based Eskimos attempt to cool off the Big Peach with their Dylan-esque rhythms and Buffalo Springfield licks. Chances are, though, the combined heat of all that — plus the incendiary pop of the Young Antiques — will set the town on fire. North Carolina country/pop act Lodestar will fan the flames with some Americana tunes off their new, aptly titled CD National Cheer. Somber Reptile (Nicoll)
THE LAURA LOVE BAND — A nice break from the club scene, the second installment of the summer concert series at Dogwood Brewing Company features Seattle-based Laura Love Band, whose music is a hodge-podge of flavors and styles which could best be described as alternative folk/funk with a spoonful of sugar-coated social commentary. The $25 cover charge ($20 advance) includes all the beer you can drink, with proceeds benefiting Camp Sunshine for children with cancer. Local acoustic legend Caroline Aiken opens. MIRA — Like a waking dream, Mira’s floating, disembodied melodies change shape and colors, gliding along with an unbound freedom. Although vocalist Regina Sosinski’s airy vocals can be hypnotic to the point of losing engagement, the band demands continual attention with its sporadic drops into aggressive, heavier moods. MIRAGE MASSIVE — Mirage produces another showcase of top DJ talent. DJs include Florida’s AK1200, one of the country’s top jungle jocks, and Baby Anne, a breaks technician bound to tweak you on a funky ride. Also spinning is San Francisco’s Jerry Bonham, the man behind Spundae, one of the West Coast’s most consistent progressive trance brands. Tabernacle (Ware)
“NEW” TERROR CLASS — When it comes to capturing the vulnerable and delicate state of love in these confusing contemporary times, nothing can touch “Give Me Your E-Mail Address, I’ll Send You Some Sick Shit,” the opening track on the latest CD by Ohio punk rockers “New” Terror Class. No matter what you think about their sloppy playing style and atonal vocals, this band is definitely punk. The Earl (Hutchinson)
SISTER HAZEL, DEXTER FREEBISH — It must take an awful lot of hard work to sound as dull and downright ineffectual as these two bands. Imagine several ex-high school jocks playing in a Toad the Wet Sprocket cover band booked in the Macon Ramada Inn Paradise Lounge, and you begin to glimpse these bands’ thoroughly mind-numbing approach. Recommended for those who found Hootie a bit too rocking. Marathon and Chrystina Lloree also perform. Centennial Olympic Park (Robertson)
