ACOUSTIC SYNDICATE — North Carolina quartet Acoustic Syndicate bring their bluegrass-based jam-fusion sounds to the Dogwood Brewing Company’s occasional live-music series. Dogwood Brewing Company/1222 Logan Circle (Sarig)

ANDREW LAMB AND ALVIN FIELDER DUO — The tenor saxophone-percussion format has been blowing up recently in Atlanta, and this installment showcases some of the best talent around today. Lamb’s fiery saxophone style has been compared to that of freebop masters John Coltrane and Archie Shepp. Drummer Fielder is a legend in his own right, playing in various AACM groups throughout the years, including Roscoe Mitchell’s ensemble for his landmark 1967 recording Sound. Recommended. Eyedrum (Khalid)

Lloyd’s BLUES MUSIC FESTIVAL — The 70-something King hasn’t lost his chops or joy of performing, but his schtick gets tiresome if you’ve seen it before. Buddy Guy is coming off his best album in years, but he’s an inconsistent performer whose crowd-wandering gimmick was stale a decade ago. Far better is John Hiatt (see Record Reviews, p. 82) who will try to cram a quarter-century career of rootsy folk-rock into a 40-minute set. Don’t arrive late for Tommy Castro, whose rollicking/R&B/blues simply crackles. Chastain Park Amphitheatre (Horowitz)

ERIC BENET — New-soul loverman Benét kicks off this year’s Montreux Atlanta Music Festival with a special concert taking place the weekend before the main free-concert series in Piedmont Park. Tickets for this one are available through Hot 97.5 and WJZZ 107.5. Tabernacle (Sarig)

KENNY CHESNEY, TIM MCGRAW — Two perfect examples of the banality in contemporary country music hit town for a double bill. Chesney has had a few lame hits, most notably that terrible “She Loves My Tractor” song. McGraw has a bit better track record, although his material often borders on cheesy power ballads. These two monkeys got in trouble last year for joyriding on a police horse in Podunk, N.Y. I would love to see them try that in Atlanta. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (J. Kelly)

DOMINIC CHIANESE — See Show ‘n’ Tell, p. 76. Variety Playhouse (Weiss)

DEEP DISH — Sharam, one half of D.C.-based deep-house DJ duo Deep Dish, sets things off with a five-hour set for the inaugural night of San Francisco’s Spundae residency at eleven50. See Deep Dish in Record Reviews, p. 85. Some of Atlanta’s best house DJs — Kevin O, Little Jen and Cullen Cole — complete the bill. eleven50 (Ware)

HIS NAME IS ALIVE, SLUMBER PARTY — See His Name Is Alive in Record Reviews, p. 82. Detroit’s all-female Slumber Party play fuzzy lullabies and bouncy pop songs. They manage melancholy without melodrama, and are dreamy without being droning. Minimalist make-out music for fans of the Nico-years Velvet Underground. Echo Lounge (Ware)

GRETA LEE — Local country stalwart Greta Lee gets set to go Nashville with the release her new CD, You Must Be Present to Win, which she unveils during two shows (8 and 10 p.m.) tonight (see Earshot, p. 81). Thanks to the Nashville session musicians on it, You Must Be sounds somewhat slicker and more focused than her indie debut, but a classic country feel still pervades Lee’s facile ditties. Catch her in local clubs while you still can. The Earl (Sarig)

MARSHALL TUCKER BAND — Some guys just don’t know when to quit. The only Southern rock band to use a flute and live to tell about it, the MTB keeps making the rounds at these oldies gigs. Way back in the last century they had a good reputation, but never could grab the big-time cred of Skynyrd. Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater (J.Kelly)

MEMORY DEAN — After some time away from the local live-music scene, semi-acoustic duo Memory Dean return with a new set of songs, coming out next month on the CD, Love is Love. Still offering the sort of slightly jammy, slightly Southern, mostly middle-of-the-road rock that puts them in league with everyone from Hootie and Edwin McCain to Dave Matthews, Mssrs. Memory and Dean won’t surprise you and, if you’re disposed to this sort of thing, won’t disappoint you either. CJ’s Landing (Sarig)

GREG TROOPER — A shadowy singer/songwriter idolized by those on the edgy side of the C&W biz, Trooper has released Straight Down Rain, his best album from a frustrating 16 years of trying to crack the mainstream. His introspective songs and emotionally laced vocals rip into his heart and spill out his guts with class and subtlety. Swallow at the Hollow (Horowitz)

VARNALINE — Now signed to Steve Earle’s E Squared label, moody Anders Parker (aka Varnaline) has free range to plow into his Son Volt/Neil Young/Dinosaur Jr. influences, wallowing in gloom with just the glimmer of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. His songs don’t sink in immediately but grow over you like moss on a wet tree trunk, gradually engulfing your brain with their creeping, tensile power. He’s consumed and it shows. Heady, uncompromising and powerful. The Earl (Horowitz)

VIRJIN — Chamber resident Gene Carbonell hosts another night of progressive-house talent, this time featuring Voyager, an artist born from the Orlando breakbeat scene who has gone on to compose for some of the biggest underground progressive labels of the UK. Together with Carbonell and other locals, Voyager has helped with production on a track to be released on Florida’s highly respected FADE Records. SOCO Audio’s Marcos Pieras provides a momentary reprieve from the main room’s pounding, playing deep house and downtempo in the Asylum. The Chamber (Ware)

YOUNG ANTIQUES, DODD FERRELLE — One of Atlanta’s finest, the Young Antiques bring their high-octane hybrid of rock, new-wave and literate Americana back to the Star Bar. Tonight they feature special guest Dodd Ferrelle, an old friend of the band. Ferrelle, who’ll be backed by the Tin Foil All-Stars, is an Athens resident plowing the same fields as the ‘Tiques, yet who grows his own crop of burlap-rough roots rock. Star Bar (Smith)
