Sound Menu September 19 2001 Mon
CUTTHROATS 9 — Unsane’s Chris Spencer is the star of this extreme rock band whose edgy, caustic sound burns like a rusty razor. The Throats’ searing new CD is quite appropriately titled Anger Management. The Earl (Nicoll)
LEMON JUICE QUARTET — From Zappa to avant klezmer, this NYC group runs the gamut of eclectic jam music. Trumpeter Avishai Cohen even seems to have taken cues from some of the wilder Tejano blowers. Not exactly jazz, but not exactly anything else either. Earthshaking Music (Khalid)
WILCO, THE HANDSOME FAMILY — Of Uncle Tupelo’s two splinter groups, Wilco’s the one that keeps evolving (while Jay Farrar/Son Volt limps along with decreasing returns). In fact, Wilco might be progressing a little too far for some: Upon delivering their next record — apparently a challenging departure from their rootsy, classic-pop past — major label Reprise promptly released them of their contract. Currently searching for a new label, Wilco hits the road to keep the momentum going. Fellow Chicago postmodern/roots act the Handsome Family, supporting a new album Twilight, opens. Roxy (Sarig)
