PATRICIA BARBER — There has been ample pleasure in recent years in discovering a fresh crop of female jazz singers — Cassandra Wilson, Diana Krall and the like. Patricia Barber fits right in, with the smoky vocals, lively and off-beat piano-playing and a melancholy aura. Festooned with awards and praise, Barber comes out swinging, cool and seductive. Sambuca Jazz Cafe (Madigan)
BUILT TO SPILL, MODEST MOUSE — In an Atlanta-exclusive double billing, indie-gone-major flagship bands Modest Mouse and Built to Spill converge for two nights of the best college rock has to offer. Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock spins guitar-driven tales of isolation with the drunken swagger of Midwestern trailer trash. Doug Martsch, Built To Spill’s enigmatic front man, showcases his guitar-god capabilities, which are underscored by a timid voice that is paradoxically bold in its endearing bashfulness. Both trios, known for their fantastic live shows, will surely offer plenty of off-kilter melodies and excitement. Variety Playhouse (Jordan)
SUNSHINE FIX, FOUR CORNERS — Athens represents, as Olivia Tremor Control’s Bill Doss brings his country-influenced Sunshine Fix project down Ga. 316. Adding to the mix are Athens-based, Brit-influenced the Four Corners. Their late-’60s organ-oozing, jangly garage nuggets may be presented in a mono mix on their Say You’re a Scream debut, but their Mod madness will leave your head buzzing in stereo. Echo Lounge (Ware)
