RICHARD BUCKNER, ANDERS PARKER (OF VARNALINE) — See Richard Buckner article, p. 89. Although the solo setting robs Parker’s songs of some of their shambling power, his low-key approach and wispy, dark, unkempt voice — somewhat similar to Neil Young and Jay Farrar — might add even more expressive weight to the songs he fills with confused, alienated people caught in an emotional cul-de-sac. The Earl (Horowitz)

DAVID VIA & CORN TORNADO — While in town to play this weekend’s Harvest Festival, Via and his backing trio bring their Blue Ridge bluegrass boogie to Midtown. Red Light Cafe (Sarig)

SNOOP DOGG — The Doggfather is still workin’ for a living, on the road peddling his wares — his new clothing line, his new movie Bones and his new record Duces N Trays with Tha Eastsidaz. Then again maybe staying on the road isn’t such a bad idea — after all, Suge Knight’s a free man these days. HiFi Buys Amphitheatre (Whitaker)

CHRIS WHITLEY, RECKLESS KELLY — As much as it might pain those who still cling to the tasteful atmospherics and restrained arrangements that made his self-titled 1991 debut such a critical coup, Chris Whitley is a better man for abandoning that restrictive formula. Since then, he has veered maddeningly from abrasive noise rock to dirty blues to a curiously inspired trip-hop/blues hybrid on his latest, Rocket House. Austin roots-rock warriors Reckless Kelly missed their window of major-label opportunity a few years ago, but keepin’ on despite the obstacles has a charm all its own. Smith’s Olde Bar (Rowland)

LEE ANN WOMACK — The lady can sing her ass off, and when she sticks to the real country stuff, she nails it. Unfortunately, her record company has tried to turn her into a Shania clone, with pumped-up remixes and flashy videos. You can bet there will be enough flash on stage to keep your attention. North Georgia State Fair/Marietta (J. Kelly)
