Sound Menu September 26 2001 Fri
RYAN ADAMS — See article. Variety Playhouse (Peisner)
BEACH BOYS — It’s a stretch to call this act the Beach Boys when none of the Wilson brothers are included in the lineup, especially when yet another founding member, Al Jardine, is off touring with a rival group. However, the BB’s repertoire of hits is as impressive as ever, and principal vocalist Mike Love can usually still hit those high notes, making you believe — however briefly — that nothing’s more important than sun, sand and surf. Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater (Nicoll)
BRMC — California reverb/white-noise trio Black Rebel Motorcycle Club offer a rawly produced collection of songs influenced quite clearly by the late ’80s/early ’90s British shoegazer scene. Live, BMRC don’t stray too far from their recordings, though there is no volume control, so be advised to bring your earplugs to withstand their “in-the-red” attack. Echo Lounge (Ware)
CANDELA — Hard rock goes to the ‘burbs tonight as Atlanta’s headbanging honeys tackle Tucker. The band is joined by founding drummer Ann Clayton, formerly of Boobytrap. North Carolina metal welders Sudden Fear open. Last Great H2O Hole (Smith)
DEZERAY’S HAMMER — While they wear their Matchbox Twenty, Collective Soul and Bodeans influences draped over their arena-rock sleeves, this Spartanburg, S.C., trio sure has a knack for punchy singalong hooks and muscular sense of melody. Singer/songwriter Aaron Whisnant’s tendency to take himself too seriously gets tiresome, but his talent is undeniable. This is a CD release show for the band’s new Immune album. Smith’s Olde Bar (Horowitz)
DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS — See article, p. 81. Star Bar (Sarig)
FRIDAY JAZZ — Local jazz fusion band T. Woods & Tomana joins contemporary Andean group Vientos del Pueblo for a night of music, art, fun and games, beginning at 5 p.m. High Museum (Sarig)
HARVEST MUSIC FESTIVAL — The fourth annual autumn weekend of camping, jamming and roots music gets under way today. On the main stage: River Bottom Band (3 p.m.); Deep Blue Sun (4:20 p.m.); David Via & Corn Tornado (6 p.m.); Smokin’ Grass (7:40 p.m.); The Code Talkers featuring Col. Bruce Hampton, Ike Stubblefield, Count M’Butu and Vassar Clements (9:30 p.m.); The Funky Meters (11:30 p.m.); Outside Out screening (2 a.m.). For more information, visit www.tdawgsproductions.com. Also see Earshot, p. 91. Atlanta’s Back Porch/Fairburn (Sarig)
LANTERNA, MILES TILMANN, STILLIFE;GAIJIN — Eyedrum, along with sub:marine records, present an evening of electro-acoustic exploration. The delay-draped droning guitars of Lanterna’s recent release, Elm Street, make for perfect autumnal aurals. Formed from wintry roots nourished by Dead Can Dance, the Cocteau Twins and Ennio Morricone, Lanterna make slowly unfolding instrumentals that don’t forsake aim for ambiance. Chicago’s Miles Tilmann, a recent sub:marine signing, makes deeply, darkly throbbing, melodic techno minimalism that shuffles between laptop-splattered IDM beats and warm Vangelis-like synth pads. Stillife;gaijin — featuring “bizarro glam” looping, clicking and droning electronics from former underwater members — finds inspiration in This Mortal Coil and Seefeel. Eyedrum (Ware)
LIQUIFIED NATION 3 — Liquid Groove lays out another fluid night of top DJ talent with the trance-ndental sounds of Sandra Collins, Taylor and Kazell, as well as a rinsing by drum ‘n’ bass ambassadors AK1200, Stakka and Skynet, DJ Wally with MC Posi-D and locals Mayhem, Kia and Race One. Weather permitting there also will be an outdoor ambient/chill-out area. Tickets are being capped earlier to allow increased space for dancing. Masquerade (Ware)
LOS STRAITJACKETS — The staunchly instrumental masked-surf combo has relented and added vocals to their new Sing Along With ... album. Although they employ a different singer on each track, silky voiced western-swinger Big Sandy takes all the parts in this sure-to-be-packed gig. Star Bar (Horowitz)
ULTRABABYFAT, DROPSONIC, BABY-SHAKER — A full evening of sonic booms is in the making when these three share the stage. Ultrababyfat combines sweet lil’-girl vocals with slamming rock rhythm, and Dropsonic (who sometimes share a bassist with the Ultrababes) are their boy-band equivalent. This shows opens with the equally punchy attack of Baby-Shaker. Tonight, the cradle will rock. The Earl (Nicoll)
WARSAW — Unlike many an ill-fated ’90s ska-flavored band, Warsaw has continued to evolve as the novelty of the genre wears thinner. Their latest release, Pimpin’ on Crutches, forgoes the fast hiccup of ska for the smoother, more melodic approach of dub reggae — all while keeping things appropriately punk, of course. Brandyhouse (Hutchinson)
BOBBY WOMACK — Not wanting to pigeonhole himself, this Sam Cooke protege left gospel music behind early in his career. He went on to work with Hendrix and Aretha, and wrote songs for Janis Joplin and the Stones. He didn’t even break a sweat. Womack’s latest album, Back to my Roots, re-visits his secular past, but his show will include all aspects of his considerable output. Civic Center (Madigan)
