ATLANTA BALALAIKA SOCIETY — The 25-member Russian folk orchestra dresses in traditional costumes when playing its balalaikas, domras and other stringed instruments. Tonight it presents its seasonal concert, “A Fall Fantasy of Music,” which features folk and classical songs from Russian, Gypsy and other Eastern European traditions. For more information, call 770-977-8537. Roswell Cultural Arts Center (Sarig)

RACHEL BARTON, ASO — See listing for Thurs., Oct. 4. Symphony Hall (Brown)

TAB BENOIT — A handsome young bluesman, Benoit plays Cajun music so deeply soaked in the classic N’Awlins swamp-beat tradition that his album These Blues are All Mine rowed home a boat full of awards during a recent poll by the Crescent City’s Offbeat magazine, including best blues performer, best blues album and song of the year (for the disc’s title track). Benoit’s currently touring the country aboard a massive stretch-SUV that’s sure to fill up more than half of the parking lot at Chip’s tonight, so arrive plenty early for one of the few remaining spots. Chip’s/Winder (Nicoll)

DC TALK — The cynical dismiss DC Talk as prefab sex symbols for the gospel crowd, but the trio — together since ‘89 — have released a string of surprisingly good music along the way. Their rock and rap-tinged testimonies stray from the preachy pulpit and sneak down the alley of worldly pleasures now and then. Tonight the three members indulge in an orgy of self-satisfaction by performing solo, for a segmented show featuring songs from their three recent solo albums. HiFi Buys Ampitheatre (Smith)

DREAM STREET — This may be the earliest starting time ever for a show at the Variety. Today at 1 p.m., teen heartthrobs Dream Street perform an all-ages matinee. The pre-fab boy band from New York plays songs spanning their entire two-year career. Wonder if they’ll sing their Kellogg’s and Kraft Lunchables jingles? Variety Playhouse (Smith)

EDEN — With their first professionally produced recording, the five-track The Power Garden EP, local quartet Eden emerge as a band of choice for the many out there seeking well-crafted middle-of-the-road rock that’s suitably melodramatic, aesthetically inoffensive and eminently familiar. The Counting Crows, the Wallflowers and bits of Creed’s bombast combine with a set of catchy tunes to create a sound that’s partly dated, but common enough to sound timeless. Eden performs at 9:15 p.m. following an hour of free food and beer. Jay Harren, Mary’s Eyes and Modern Hero perform later in the evening. Dark Horse Tavern (Sarig)

KRISTEN HALL, ALICE PEACOCK — A longtime local live favorite whose credits include an album on Daemon Records, Kristen Hall brings her powerful persona back to Decatur once more tonight for two shows. Opening the late show this evening is Alice Peacock, a gifted performer with a pleasantly raspy Lotte Lenya-type vocal prowess who comes from a long line of German cabaret artists (Her father worked with Bertolt Brecht). Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)

ALLAN HARRIS — See listing for Fri., Oct. 5. Churchill Grounds (Hutchinson)

ILL MIC — Local rock quartet Ill Mic releases its self-titled debut CD at tonight’s show. Alternating between rap-rock, modern/loud rock and a mellower soul-rock style, Ill Mic offers few surprises but not much to warrant outright scorn, either. The band does its best with tracks like “Same Joe,” which fall into a screaming-guitar boogie that’s a pleasant throwback to earlier eras of rock ‘n’ roll hoochie coo. The Library (Sarig)

THE MOTO-LITAS — See article. Echo Lounge (Smith/Nicoll)

KAOS REBORN — For the most part the line-up of this hard house, breaks and jungle-heavy event isn’t noteworthy, save for maybe Vicious Vic and Freaky Flow. But the real draw is an appearance by Dynamix II, whose electro sound helped lay down the foundation for the creative Miami bass scene of the late ’80s. The Atrium (Ware)

MJQ TURNS 4 — DJs Kai, Kemit and Cullen steer the crowd through a pre-midnight open bar to celebrate the fourth b-day of Midtown’s eclectic subterranean night spot. There’s more planned after midnight, with details to come. MJQ Concourse (Sarig)

THE PRODUCERS — See Earshot. Cotton Club (Smith)

ROCK*A*TEENS — See article. The Earl (Ware)

STAR ROOM BOYS, PULLMAN PORTERS — Here are two bands who’ve really done their homework. The Athens-based Star Room Boys play pure, earthy, uncluttered country music in an almost forgotten tradition, one that harks back to a simpler time before Hollywood poisoned Nashville’s heart with rhinestone glitz. Similarly, the Pullman Porters draw from earlier era, even taking their band’s name from a group pre-WWII activists who struggled to unionize Chicago’s African-American railroad workers.
