BREEZE KINGS — Anchored by bandleader Carlos Capote, BK define themselves by the blues they choose and the way they play it — authentic, pre-rock excavations, mostly from ’50s and ’60s icons and lesser-knowns, delivered with a rowdy vigor that’s true to the form. Guitarist Jim Ransone is back after missing more than five weeks with a broken hand. Northside Tavern (Powell)

BR549 — See Record Reviews, p. 107. Cotton Club (J. Kelly)

JEFF COFFIN — Nashville saxophonist Coffin has made a name for himself as a touring member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. But the multi-instrumentalist has been active as a studio musician for more than a decade. Besides gigging with Dave Matthews, the Dixie Chicks and others, Coffin has found time to release a solo album, Commonality. Smith’s Olde Bar (Smith)

CROOKED JADES — Ranging from spirited porch stomps to reflective, duck-feeding melancholy, the music of San Francisco’s Crooked Jades captures the complex emotional make-up of the old-time songwriter. But while their bluegrass-based instrumental prowess runs thick with nuance and sophistication, their old-timey vocals fall a little short of that elusive authentic Appalachian nasal tenor. Red Light Cafe (Hutchinson)

PAUL VAN DYK — See Record Reviews, p. 103. In addition, Kolia drops deep funky house. DeKalb Atlanta Center (Ware)

MACEO PARKER — Tenor sax man Parker is F-A-W-N-K-Y in the deepest JB/Clinton/Isley tradition. That makes sense: He worked with Brown for the more than a decade, and later with Parliament/Funkadelic and Bootsy’s Rubber Band. But at 58, Parker is no dinosaur. He’s toured with Dave Matthews and Ani DiFranco, successfully bringing a contemporary blend of jazz, funk and R&B to young audiences. Roxy (Powell)

MONTGOMERY GENTRY — Hillbilly honky-tonkers from the Kentucky, Montgomery Gentry offer a worthy alternative to the Brooks & Dunn school of country duos. Cumming County Fair (Smith)

SLOW HORSE — Much like a steady roaring train, Slow Horse’s loud stoner rock explores more melodic regions than other acts in the genre. The New York band’s self titled debut is a road-trip album somewhere on the softer side of hell, but none-the-less darker. 9 Live Saloon (Hatcher)

TAMMY ALLEN & MPX, ELEPHANTS GERALD — Soulful singer Tammy Allen and her Metapop Experience make original music packed with positive messages. Elephants Gerald is a Texas big band packed with horns and voices, whose tunes echo the hits of Chicago, Tower of Power and Blood, Sweat & Tears. Eddie’s Attic (Nicoll)
