Sound Menu October 10 2001 Sun
ATLANTA BAROQUE ORCHESTRA — Local specialists in the music of the 17th and 18th centuries presents its "Triple Treat" program today at 3 p.m. That is, three works, each composed for three instruments, by Telemann, Vivaldi and Bach. Spivey Hall (Sarig)
BREAST CANCER BENEFIT — Salty Texas outfit Slobberbone headlines this benefit for Emory's breast cancer research efforts. Slobberbone is all about the rock — rugged, ramshackle, rife with piss and vinegar, and beer-battered soul searching. After six years of relentless touring, their road rash has taken on all the attributes of a steel-clad callus. Opening the evening at 8 p.m., former Marvelous 3 frontman Butch Walker offers an acoustic set, previewing his still-germinating solo career. In between, the Yard and the Enigmatics perform. Smith's Olde Bar (Rowland)
CANDLER PARK FALLFEST — See listing for Sat., Oct. 13. Today's main stage features the Deluxe Vaudville Orchestra, among others. Candler Park (St. John)
ROBERT EARL KEEN — Lyle Lovett's former porch-pickin' pal could've easily locked into a lazy pattern by now, pandering to the bra-less, Bud-swilling university crowd that has made him a superstar all over Texas. But Keen has chosen instead to forge ahead, and on his latest release, Gravitational Forces, the Houston native continues to refine his craft and extend his reach, matching his simple, approachable storytelling to country-folk melodies that surge and swing. Variety Playhouse (Rowland)
KINGS X, MOKE — It's unfortunate and startling that prog/metal trio Kings X never found its audience despite 12 years, eight solid albums of smart (too smart?) hard-rock/funk and some truly great songs. But they've kept the faith and have remained an exhilarating live act. The openers have been burdened by over-promotion, but their inspired, melodic Brit-pop is tough enough to withstand the hype. Cotton Club (Horowitz)
