Sound Menu October 17 2001 Tues
DAN BERN, KITTY SNYDER — Once you get past the obvious Petty/Dylan/Costello comparisons, Bern is a t alented and energetic — if not terribly original — roots/folk rocker with better-than-average tunes that resonate even without the crisp backing band on his latest album. The same goes for Athens-based singer/songwriter Snyder, whose David Lowery-produced disc is excellent, but no match for her live show. Smith's Olde Bar (Horowitz)
FEAR FACTORY, MACHINE HEAD — Having these two bands on the same bill is like surviving a piano being dropped on your head only to be run over by a truck. Fear Factory's Digimortal is one of the best metal records of the year. Ditto Machine Head's Supercharger. Did anyone get the license plate of that truck? Masquerade (Kohler)
DAVID GANS — Though known primarily as an interpreter and enthusiast of the Grateful Dead, Gans' recent Solo Acoustic CD also features songs by Gram Parsons, Martin Mull and Gillian Welch. Red Light Cafe (Sarig)
LOW, FRIDGE — Though this Mormon Minnesotan "slo-core" trio may not do much when performing their brooding, slowing building songs, Low amazes you by making music so spare and subtle seem so utterly all-encompassing. Fridge's warm echoing tracks are epic yet intricately etched — offering improvisation that sprawls without losing focus. Echo Lounge (Ware)
