ECHO LOUNGE THIRD ANNIVERSARY PARTY — Comic, cosmic metalheads Gargantua headline a five-band bill that also includes the forceful precision sounds of Drill Team, the intoxicating King’s Pills, the rocky Pits and the flat-out snarling dementia of Hillbilly Werewolf. Echo Lounge (Nicoll)
FAMILY VALUES — Here’s the scenario: It’s 2021, it’s 3 a.m., and you can’t fall asleep thanks to a bad case of acid indigestion. You’re watching a “Law & Order” marathon on Lifetime when the following commercial airs: “Millennium Rock: Bands of the Family Values Tour CD, featuring Stone Temple Pilots, Staind, Static X and Linkin Park! Relive the days when rock ‘n’ roll was the province of thick-necked jocks who wore their hats backward!” Sure, hindsight is 20/20, but I’m telling you ahead of time, this stuff blows. Philips Arena (Robertson)
FULL MOON HALLOWEEN FETISH BALL — Sue Stimulant, the chirpy former leader of the Stimulants, now fronts the dark and dingy Salome’s Wish. They play inside, along with the brooding, atmospheric keyboard-driven spookiness of L.A.’s The Last Dance. And scary newcomers Elocia just may unhinge the creaking front door of the Masquerade with their unsettlingly dense opening set. Out back in the Music Park, locals 5 More Dead highlight a lineup that includes Pagan Drumming, Worm’s Union, Sex and Death Tribe and Thought Police. Masquerade (Smith/Sarig)
KARL DENSON’S TINY UNIVERSE, JACK JOHNSON — A favorite of the jam-happy Phish-heads, the ex-Lenny Kravitz hornman is a sort of contemporary Maceo Parker, injecting jittery hip-hop loops and hard funk into his traditional jazz lines. Johnson is a Cali surfer whose successful contribution to a G. Love album provided an outlet for his like-minded laid-back acoustic hip-hop. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)
LIQUIFIED’S SEVENTH ANNUAL HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION — Liquid Groove turns its attention away from international superstars to celebrate its local DJs. While Kazell now spends more time on the West Coast, his progressive trance/house has been a Liquid Groove staple. And DJ Hyst represents the ATL massive, dropping intelligent 2-step drum ‘n’ bass and nu_breaks. Riviera (Ware)
CURTIS SALGADO — Enjoying stints with Robert Cray, Roomful of Blues and Steve Miller, Salgado has worked a stage or two in his time. His own albums remain overlooked gems, filled with blue-eyed soul nuggets sung with the earnest conviction of a guy who works hard but lives the life he loves. Blind Willie’s (Horowitz)
BOB SCHNEIDER — See article, p. 94. Cotton Club (Rowland)
SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS, CHICKENS AND PIGS — With a live show that’s equal parts rock ‘n’ roll, country, psychobilly, surf and garage rawk, SCOTS have always been the perfect Star Bar act. Local yokels Chickens and Pigs — whose music suggests Hank Sr. and Tom Waits on a horror hayride — open. Star Bar (Nicoll)
SUB VERSE RECORDS SHOWCASE — See cover story, p. 31. Kaya (Sarig)
WITCHES BREW — A band that probably has no difficulty booking Halloween gigs, Atlanta’s Witches Brew are like the evil twins of rising homeboys El Pus. They make fairly conventional rap-rock, but with occasional flourishes that reveal a knack for pop and, of course, the requisite horror imagery necessary to live up to its name. 9 Lives Saloon (Sarig)
