GARY ALLEN — See Record Reviews, p. 110. Cowboys (J. Kelly)

ASO CHORUS — See listing for Thurs., Nov. 8. Symphony Hall (Brown)

JOE CLAY, BLACKTOP ROCKETS — A genuine survivor from the 1950s, Joe Clay sang on some of that decade’s wildest (and ultimately most collectible) rockabilly tracks. Still crazy after all those years, Clay was a crowd favorite at the Dixie Rockabilly Rumble a couple of years back, shakin’ all over long into the wee hours. With expert musical backup once again from Atlanta’s own Blacktop Rockets, he returns to re-create that reverberant energy tonight. Star Bar (Nicoll)

DISPATCH — In recent years, this New England trio has been gaining momentum among New England college crowds, even getting labeled “the next Dave Matthews Band.” Dubious distinctions aside, the at-turns folksy and funky pop risers generate a jazzy Phish-like vibe you’ll probably find catchy in spite of yourself. Show time is 10:30 p.m., after Melissa Ferrick performs (separate admission required). Variety Playhouse (Butler)

MELISSA FERRICK — While it’s chic to decry the lack of substance in so much popular music, artists like Ani DiFranco, Catie Curtis and Melissa Ferrick have carved out respectable careers by crafting quality albums, cultivating their gay audience and touring their butts off. With her stripped down band, Ferrick tears into folk-rock songs live like a caged Melissa Etheridge. She earns her fans the old-fashioned way — one show at a time. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)

FIVE EIGHT, BLACK GOLDSTEIN, 1945 — Athens’ hard-working warhorses Five Eight headline this show, but the trio may very well be upstaged tonight by the modest debut of Black Goldstein. The ensemble is a gathering of some Atlanta scene vets including Keli Mercadante, the firey former Wild West Picture Show vocalist, Changelings drummer Chandler Rentz and pop chanteuse/songwriter Cricket. Daemon Records’ pop darlings 1945 are also on the bill, featuring former members of Three Finger Cowboy. Smith’s Olde Bar (Smith)

FRIDAY JAZZ — For the last time this year, the High holds its popular Friday Jazz event, which combines the museum’s exhibits with live music, a poetry reading and dance performance, plus art workshops. Traditional folk duo the Hamiltons perform, along with local jazz outfit the Jacques Lesure Quintet. It’s free to museum members. High Museum (Sarig)

DAVID GARZA — A third generation Mexican-American musician, singer-songwriter Garza has been churning out songs in various bands since his late teens. On his way to becoming a major-label act, his material evolved from the wordy, enthusiasm and acoustic shuffle of his early work to a more streamlined, glam-rock sound. His latest, Overdub, meets old and new halfway for a dynamic mix that’s worth checking out. He performs in-store at 5 p.m. Borders Books and Music/650 Ponce de Leon (Sarig)

TAJ MAHAL, THE FUNKY METERS — An ingeniously simpatico billing: Both Taj and the Meters draw from the same well, one that is steeped in blues, Caribbean and African roots. The result, in both cases, is an emphasis on syncopated rhythm that’s both familiar and irresistible. Roxy (Powell)

MIKE KELLY TRIO, CHARLES DAVIS — See listing for Thurs., Nov. 8. Churchill Grounds (Powell)

PROGPOWER USA 2.0 FESTIVAL — The Vikings invade America. Ten underground bands from Sweden, Germany, Norway, England and the U.S. bring their rarely heard music to town. Progressive metal — not to be confused with death metal or thrash — is a pseudo-symphonic synthesis of ’70s prog rock and ’80s metal that emphasizes chops and addresses real-life issues. Headliner Symphony X, from New Jersey, has sold hundreds of thousands of records in Europe and Japan, but this is only their seventh American appearance. EarthLink Live (Williams)

ROBERT RAY — Atlanta singer/pianist Robert Ray brings his Cirque du Cabaret show back to town for two final shows. In addition to Ray, the show features six female vocalists and a six-piece band in a show that combines pop, blues, country, show tunes and gospel. Libby’s Cabaret (Sarig)

STRING CHEESE INCIDENT — Your appreciation for this neo-jam band will depend largely on your tolerance for hyphen-abusing, style-mongering (how’s bluegrass-calypso-salsa-Afro-pop-funk-rock-jazz grab you?). Marginally more interesting than most of the Phish-wannabes currently clogging the nation’s highways with their VW microbuses, though that’s hardly a ringing endorsement. Classic Center/Athens (Robertson)

SWIMMING POOL Q’S — Still gliding on the considerable momentum generated by the current CD re-issue of their 1981 classic The Deep End, the Pool Q’s are enjoying a fresh groundswell of popularity. Although their new wave certainly isn’t new any more, this band has plenty of new songs that stand up proudly against vintage crowd-pleasers such as “Little Misfit” and “Rat Bait.” Red Light Cafe (Nicoll)

THE WIGGLES — Popular children’s group the Wiggles bring their on-stage entourage (which includes a dinosaur, pirate, octopus and dog) from their home in Australia for a U.S. tour. Shows times are Friday at 4 and 7 p.m., and Saturday at 11 a.m., 2 and 5 p.m. Christian City Church/Lawrenceville (Sarig)

JOSH WINK — Emerging out of the Philadelphia scene in the mid-’90s, Josh Wink has managed major-label deals and major underground hits simultaneously. Trance-inducing acid workouts are Wink’s main game, though he’ll venture so far as drum ‘n’ bass if he feels, so open your mind and your ass will follow. Nomenclature’s Kevin O opens up the main room, while Little Jen and Bobble have the gallery 187 locked down. eleven50 (Ware)

THE YOUNG ANTIQUES, SHARKS AND MINNOWS, DODD FERRELLE AND THE TIN FOIL STARS — Blending elements of straight-ahead rock, new wave and Americana, the Young Antiques’ Wardrobe for a Jet Weekend is a wonderful addition to fans of Costello, Lowe or Wilco. Sharks and Minnows’ buoyant pop should mesh well with the bookends of rock and country from the ‘Tiques and Athens resident Dodd Ferrelle. Backed by his excellent band the Tin Foil stars, Ferrelle’s honest songwriting and impassioned delivery will please any Steve Earle fan. The Earl (Smith)
