FRED EAGLESMITH, OH SUSANNA — Fred Eaglesmith manages to follow in a long line of Canadian country-oriented artists — from Neil Young to Shania Twain to Blue Rodeo. In fact, he does a good job combining the folkie, psychedelic and fuzzy rock elements of artists like Young and Blue Rodeo (sorry Shania). Oh Susanna’s Suzie Ungerleider is herself a Canadian with a taste for American folk idioms, though on her latest, Sleepy Little Sailor, she takes a turn toward a more contemporary rock and soul. Eddie’s Attic (Ware/Sarig)

FIN FANG FOOM, MERCURY PROGRAM, ENGINE DOWN — Swinging wildly from explosion to reservation, Chapel Hill indie rockers Fin Fang Foom believe in the tension-and-release model of rocking out. Atonal wailing over loose beats gives way to understated flute whispers. An audience of thousands claps one hand in unison. Florida’s Mercury Program play dreamy, jazz-influenced post-rock full of glistening guitar lines that flirt and arc from multiple trajectories, intertwining but never colliding. And Virginia’s Engine Down play dense rock in odd rhythms, with multi-faceted instrumentation and an emo sensibility. MJQ Concourse (Hutchinson/Ware)

FISHBONE, BLOWFLY, DIRTY WALT & THE COLUMBUS SANITATIONS, DR. MADD VIBE — It’s not just a Fishbone show, it’s a freakin’ Fishbone experience as the wildly eccentric and eclectic funk/ska/metalers play house band and Angelo Moore (aka Madd Vibe) emcees the festivities. They’ll back the infamous Blowfly, king of the XXX party albums whose raunchy raps predated 2 Live Crew and are, at best, an acquired taste. The opener is a side project from Fishbone trumpet man “Dirty Walt” Kibby. Think P-Funk meets Redd Foxx, but even more unpredictable. Variety Playhouse (Horowitz)

CHARLIE HUNTER QUARTET, ROBERT WALTER’S 20TH CONGRESS — See Charlie Hunter in Record Reviews. The funk-and-blues-heavy jazz offered by keyboardist Walter and his quintet provides an entirely appropriate warm-up set for Hunter. EarthLink Live (Sarig)

SASHA, SEAN CUSICK — If trance has lately become the fast food of dance music, UK-based DJ/producer Sasha is the Big Mac. Supersized. Next to Paul Oakenfold, Sasha (plus his partner John Digweed) has probably done more than any other DJ worldwide to popularize the epic build/break pattern that has become the comfort food for American party kids. Having taken quite some time recently to concentrate on producing, this appearance by Sasha is indeed a rare beast. Sean Cusick — who mixes sexed-up progressive tech-house — also spins. eleven50 (Ware)
