DAVE GROSS, LIZ TONNE — Two of Boston’s leading improvisational musicians, clarinetist/saxophonist Dave Gross and vocalist Liz Tonne, join forces for a free-form collaboration. Eyedrum (Sarig)
JOHN WESLEY HARDING, DAVID LEWIS — Yes, John Wesley Harding nicked his name from the Dylan album. Yes, he’s a hyper- literate singer/songwriter. And no, he’s not a latter-day Dylan; though Harding shares supersharp lyrics and simple melodies, he never aims to be. You can’t miss his reverence for Dylan, but you can also hear Prine, Hyatt and other smarties in there. He’s clearly a disciple of many, but Harding’s ways of word-twisting are all his. Harding’s own protege, David Lewis — another modern-day Brit folkie, but with more of a Nick Drake bent — opens. Eddie’s Attic (R. Kelly)
KRONOS QUARTET — Expect the unexpected. The Kronos Quartet brings its usual take-no-prisoners attitude toward programming. Somehow, the group pulls off weird things without seeming weird at all — a true sign of class. These highly trained, highly skilled musicians specialize in translating current pop and world music into the language of the string quartet — and doing it admirably. For information, call 404-471-6430. Presser Hall/Agnes Scott College (Brown)
PRESTON SCHOOL OF INDUSTRY, THE SHINS, THE STANDARD — See Preston School in Record Reviews, p. 105. New Mexico quartet the Shins’ Oh, Inverted World is poppy psychedelic folk rock wonderfully out of step with modern music, akin to the works of Love, the Byrds or Syd Barrett. The Standard play with a much more jagged edge to their guitar/keyboard-led screech, mixing Northwest aggression with East Coast collegiate indie rock’s odd melodicism. The Earl (Ware)
