Sound Menu November 14 2001 Wed week out
DEFAULT, NICKELBACK, SALIVA — Who knew that lumbering would ever be considered a positive attribute? Well, commercially speaking, it certainly seems to be working for these three hard-rock bands (a generic term for a pretty generic sound falling roughly between true metal and guitar-based pop). Two of these three bands are Canadian (Default and Nickelback), indicating that stricter border controls are in order. Tabernacle (Robertson)
GRAVES — The Misfits’ Michale Graves, trusty sidekick Dr. Chud and the rest of the band bring their gothic punk to Atlanta’s home for goth and punk. Masquerade (Sarig)
(INTERNATIONAL) NOISE CONSPIRACY, THE HIVES — Sweden’s (International) Noise Conspiracy — who have roots in the influential hardcore band Refused — mix anti-capitalist politics with intelligent post-hardcore punk, garage rock and ’70s mod-style maximum R&B, conjuring up highly palatable rallying rhythms. Fans of the Strokes take heed: The Hives, also from Sweden, play with the manic energy of ’50s rock ‘n’ roll — when the music was for teenagers, by teenagers, putting a scare in parents — while mixing in Ramones/New York Dolls poppy punk and just a touch of new wave. Regionally based Hero’s Severum open. Echo Lounge (Ware)
JUVENILE — New Orleans slack-rap master, Cash Money kingpin and Hot Boys all-star Juvenile offers hits like “Back That Thing Up” and “I Got That Fire,” plus “Set It Off” from his latest, Project English. Atlanta Civic Center (Sarig)
