DANIEL JOHNSTON, BRIGHT EYES, GRACE BRAUN AND HER MIDNIGHT RAINBOWS — See Daniel Johnston, p. 116. Amazingly talented yet terminally adolescent, Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) writes surprisingly complex and melancholic indie-pop with insightful lyrics delivering in his over-emoting style. This is a solo show with no band to temper his tantrums, so hope for the best. When he’s raw it can rub you raw, but when he’s good it can be great. Local Daniel Johnston friend and female counterpart Grace Braun also performs, with her Midnight Rainbows band. The Earl (Ware)

MIKE ILL AND POOR OLD SOULS — Creator of The Antifolk Road Manual, Mike iLL is a Northwest-based Iggy Pop lookalike who travels the country spreading his insightful, confrontational punk/blues gospel. Although usually performing as a solo guitarist, iLL is presently backed by Poor Old Souls, featuring Andy Action (2 Skinny J’s) on drums and Jim D (Legendary Wild Ensemble) on bass. Smith’s Olde Bar (Nicoll)

VNV NATION — VNV (Victory Not Vengeance) Nation began in London, despite the fact that their EBM (electronic body music) sound is more akin to German acts and labels. Following in a classic line of gloom-shrouded industrial dance acts, but mixing in the emotional melodic sense of bands like New Order, VNV Nation’s pounding beats and slick synths are well poised to win over dance floors, if not the war. Riviera (Ware)
